Twas the Night before Christmas. Actually.
Do you know why we have a long-standing love of Port in the UK? It’s because we used to hate the French…. Past tense though, right folks?
In the 17th century, during various bouts of Le Fisticuffs, the French would make British lives properly miserable by cutting off our wine supple. Even back then we knew the French weren’t the only viticulturists on the planet, so when the lack of wine really started to wind us up, we started looking elsewhere, and headed to Portugal for alternatives.
Long before the Brits tried to colonise the Algarve though, we were buying our second homes in the Douro River Valley region thanks to its arable grape-growing soil. In the late 17th century wine-lovers started investing in large swathes of land there, and thus it became the home of Port.
Port is a wine that includes a grape distillate to fortify it, originally so it could withstand the long boat journey back to Britain. This process delivers a sweeter richer style of wine, which is why it contrasts nicely with cheese and tends to be served at the end of your meal.
So now you know, but you might not know the rules of drinking the stuff. Fortunately that’s what the video is about so if you find it easier to watch content rather than read it, then simply press play and enjoy our last Advent Calendar vid of the year.
Have a great day tomorrow and remember, dogs aren’t just for Christmas, like and subscribe to our YouTube, and drink less, but drink better.
