When General Patton’s Third Army captured the French city of St. Avold in 1944, a group of exhausted American soldiers paused to celebrate.
Their “victory drink”?
A rare moment of wine and relief—just outside the city, near the massive Lorraine American Cemetery, where over 10,000 fallen Americans now rest.
This brief celebration was a reminder that even in the chaos of World War II, soldiers clung to humanity wherever they could find it.
Would you have taken that moment to celebrate—or kept pushing forward? Share your thoughts below 👇

When I was young I lived nearby in Creutzwald
My uncle is buried there. September 29, 1944. Plot A Row 28 grave 50.
I have pictures of my grandad, lined up at a barrel of booze, in Belgium. He also found a plane that was turned into a bar.
