Here is the next of my strange posts about the road names on Arborfield Group Holdings Limited’s development of the subdivision at 105 Oraha Road, Kumeu. This is the fourth of these postings I’ve made now. If anyone can really discern a theme here – beyond random, sort-of wine-related terms that is – can they please let me know!

So to be clear Sauterne Road is in Kumeu (sorry – I say Huapai in the video, but although this is off a road running into Huapai it is actually on the other side of the Kumeu River so counts as being in Kumeu).

The roads appear to have been named to commemorate the area’s winemaking heritage, however, Sauternes is a French region producing fabulous sweet wines, and it’s name should be spelled ending in an ‘s’. But, this is where this just could be a brilliant piece of history, cleverly referencing the wines made in Kumeu in the past. In years gone by the names of wines from classic regions were often used to describe wine styles with names such as Port, Sherry, Chablis, Hock and Champagne describing styles of wine rather than their origins. In which case it is not unlikley that local producers might have made sweet wines and labelled them as Sauternes, perhaps anglicising the spelling to Sauterne in the process. It would be nice to think that were the case rather than this just being an error resulting from ignorance.
