From the visionary mind of Wes Anderson, THE FRENCH DISPATCH brings to life a collection of stories from the final issue of an American magazine published in the fictional 20th-century French city of Ennui-sur-Blasé. Many of the world’s most beloved stars shine in this love story to journalists, including Benicio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Timothée Chalamet, Jeffrey Wright, Frances McDormand, Léa Seydoux, Stephen Park, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Lyna Khoudri, Mathieu Amalric, Christoph Waltz, Edward Norton, Jason Schwartzman, Henry Winkler, Anjelica Huston and Bill Murray. Following the death of Arthur Howitzer, editor of The French Dispatch, Howitzer’s staff convenes to write his obituary, leading to the creation of four stories: One, inspired by writer Herbsaint Sazerac (Wilson), is an unsettling travelogue of the seediest sections of the city. J.K.L. Berensen (Swinton) offers “The Concrete Masterpiece” about Moses Rosenthaler (Del Toro), a criminally insane painter, and his prison guard and muse (Seydoux). “Revisions to a Manifesto” by Lucinda Krementz (McDormand, whose character is an homage to The New Yorker’s iconic writer Mavis Gallant), is a chronicle of love and death at the height of student revolt. And writer Roebuck Wright (Jeffrey Wright) pens a suspenseful tale of drugs, kidnapping and fine dining, cop style, with “The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner.” THE FRENCH DISPATCH is filled with the intriguing, visually rewarding, complex, detailed and funny elements audiences have come to expect from writer-director Wes Anderson.

  1. I love how Anderson uses a similar cast of Legends in most of his films. I feel like if I were a filmmaker, I would be similar wishing to use a group of my favorite chameleons in every piece.

  2. Anderson is just a wonderful story teller. With an almost deadpan sense of humor countered by his stylishly colorfully detailed sets and visuals he somehow captures and conveys the human spirit while reminding us that underneath it all, we are all basically the same.
From Moonrise Kingdom to the Grand Budapest and now The French Dispatch… I keep saying this is his masterpiece. His work just becomes more refined and wonderful. I can't wait to see his next work with Bill Murray and Tom Hanks reported to be in it. How epic would it be to see these two legends sharing the screen, in a Wes Anderson flick none the less. (Edit…sadly, Bill Murray dropped from Asteroid City)
I dare say, NO ONE is making movies like Anderson is making movies in this era. So much terrible and horrid films pretending to be entertainment. I think the thing I appreciate the most about Anderson movies is the fact that not everyone gets and appreciates his work. There is… I believe a reason for this. You have to actually pay attention and possibly even think while watching. Don't really have to do that when things are exploding on screen every two mins. Hell, you have to suspend disbelief in so many films now and actually and…by that I mean…a fish man can lift a Nuclear Ballistic Submarine to the surface of the ocean. I for one, can not suspend disbelief to that degree.

  3. This has become one of my favorite movies. I'll often have it on in the background whilst working or hobbying…and find myself smiling or giggling. As far as Anderson's style….so many people seem to want to… complain about. Much like Tarantino or…any accomplished artists….there style is influenced by those that came before then and they are paying homage to the work they love. Anderson, like most, build upon that foundation to make it their own.
His four shorts on Netflix, adaptations of Rowld Dahl's stories are superb. Can't image any better to bring his written work to the screen. The cast is all four as well…. Fantastic!

  10. I like this one over Asteroid City, and Phoenician Scheme. Gonna try Isle of Dogs sometime but I have to say this movie is one of his best.

  11. Just not a good movie for entertainment purposes. The execution is very artsy and elaborate, but the idea itself is dull and not very linear. Too much substance and not enough direction.
