  1. I had dinner in Atlanta one time and asked the waitress if I ordered iced tea, would it come with a lot of sugar in it. She looked at me like I lost my mind. That is one thing I don't appreciate in the South, is Sweet Tea. What's up with the sugar?

Cornbread: I don't think sweet/savory is a regional thing…..I'm from south Texas, and one of my grandmothers made a savory jalapeno cornbread quite often, while my other grandmother made a buttery cornbread (with corn kernels in it). But I myself prefer a sweet cornbread (I use plain white sugar), then topped with a dollop of butter.

  3. She's 100% right about collard greens, a savory rich green to cut the rich buttery flavors. Plus you can sop the cornbread in the pot liqrour from it.😋

  4. She nailed it, I think. In my family you have cornbread (no sugar) and johnny cake (with sugar). I heard years back that johnny cake possibly came from "journey cake" and became johnny cake in the civil war because southern soldiers would carry it with them (Johnny Reb).

  5. Not to be that guy, but you put "colored greens" in the captions instead of "collard greens" and it's bothering me.

  6. Don't let anyone tell you silly stuff about cornbread. There are only a few things. You wouldn't use sweet cornbread for stuffing a turkey most likely, but as a side if you like it. have it. In Texas an old timey breakfast was make sweet cornbread the night before and eat it crumbled with milk and sugar next morning. You want sturdy savory cornbread to dunk in Soup Beans (pintos). Menfolk in Texas liked to make it Mexican Style with jalapenos and cheese in it. Women tended to prefer it sweet. It doesn't usually include corn kernels, except when Brits make it apparently.🙄 I don't like plain black eyed peas myself, but Hoppin' John is delicious. Collards need to be picked before bitter( don't let the flowers open) and slow cooked. Okra needs picked before the seeds are maturing. My favorite way to eat okra is pickled. These people know their stuff. I think alot of cooks might add a dash of garlic or onion powder to the chicken coating and I like a dash of cayenne.

  8. The juice from the collards is called "pot liquor" or more commonly "likker," and the classic way of eating the two together is to put a slice of cornbread into a bowl of pot likker and letting it soak up the juices. Delicious.

  11. When we moved to Alabama, we tried Fried Pickles for the first time. They were lovely. We usually do not eat a lot of fried food, but once in a while, you have to treat yourself.

  14. welcome to atlanta. This german has been here over 25 years, and i can go a LOOONGG time without eating McDonalds or KFC. real southern kitchen feels very familiar, even though we also do not have collards, i like them here. Instead of rotisserie chicken we get fried chicken or chicken fried chicken or chicken fried steak. i love sausage gravy, blackeyed peas, strawberry shortcake and peach cobbler. on the other hand, i also know that southerners will eat proper bavarian food. bratwurst, sauerkraut, schaeufele, wirsing, and so on. I think we germans do overall eat more vegetables than americans do.

  15. I live out west now but I'm originally from Alabama, and I really loved a lot of the food I ate growing up. Both of my maternal grandparents were from large families, and twice a year we'd have huge family reunions out at a state park, and eat just about every kind of Southern food imaginable.

    Seeing all that food you had spread out really brought back memories of those times. I was never a fan of okra, but collard greens, black-eyed peas and savory cornbread were ubiquitous alongside the fried chicken. I'm glad you enjoyed the food, and thank you for letting me indulge in some very happy memories. ❤

  16. I'm from Texas Lucille and yeah cornbread isn't supposed to be sweet, but I don't care, I like it better. Don't tell anyone though. Oh yeah, two words, jalapeno cornbread. Maybe just a little cayenne sprinkled into the chicken batter. I agree with the sweet potato souffle, it's sweet potato pie without the crust. Where's the vanilla ice cream on the warm cobbler?! Well, the next time I'm in Atlanta I know where I'm going for dinner. Great video. Thanks!

  17. Sweet cornbread is a cake. Normal cornbread ( no sugar added or needed) is bread. Southern spicy cornbread is a meal.

  18. As a Texas resident for 5 years and someone raised by a Southern grandpa, you give me sweet cornbread, I'mma sock you.
    Honey on the side, sure, but on it's own cornbread should be buttery, kinda creamy (can't fully explain, bit if you know, you fuckin know) and just slightly salty.
    And if your cornbread ain't brown on the bottom, you can get the fuck out.
    Pale cornbread is a crime.

  19. Y'all should have mentioned that Mary Mac's ordering procedure is unique! Instead of a menu there are little cards, about 3×5 inches, with a simple list of all their mains, sides and deserts. So, I guess, you could call that a menu. You order by marking what you'd like to eat then the server will collect and read out your order before taking them to the back. If you tell them its your first visit, you earn a little bowl of "pot liquor", the water that the collards were cooked in and a piece of cornbread, gratis. And if you happen to mention that your back and neck feel stiff, you'll get a neck and shoulder massage from the host! I am NOT making any of this up.

  20. I have good memories of MaryMac’s. My order was fried catfish, fried okra, and turnip greens or mac & cheese.

  21. Here in Texas sweet cornbread from my experience we called it cornbread cake and it was topped with like butter and sugar. Then, my favorite hush puppies are Mexican hush puppies that have whole kernel corn jalapenos and onion inside the batter. Put my favorite cornbread my mom used to make back in the seventies and eighties, she called it Waldorf cornbread which had eggs folded in which would make a layer of egg in the center of the cornbread… Yummm😂
