In this video I taste a fully mature Alsace Grand Cru Pinot Gris. This is the first of six bottles of wine that I brought back with me to New Zealand from England in my VinGardeValise, following my recent trip. One of my purposes for sharing the video is therefore to demonstrate the wines are still in perfect condition following shipping. The Josmeyer Grand Cru Brand Pinot Gris 2001, already being 24 years old is potentially very delicate, but does not seem to have suffered at all – see what you think?

Josmeyer are a notable domaine in the French wine region of Alsace. Established in 1963 by Hubert Meyer with the Meyer family’s négociant business dating back to 1854. The domaine is best known for its Artist Series collection and Grand Cru wines from the Brand and Hengst vineyards.

The estate is located in the Haut-Rhin in Wintzenheim, near Colmar, and consists of 28 hectares of vineyards. Here, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer are planted on a range of diverse soil types, from granite laced with black mica and gneiss in the Brand vineyard to limestone mixed with chalky marl in Hengst.

Fruit is hand-harvested, the bunches are pressed in a pneumatic press and settled prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel tanks. Fermentation is finished in large oak foudres. The wines are then racked and then age on their lees in old oak casks.

Josmeyer have a varied wine portfolio, covering wines right across the price spectrum. The artist series, initiated by Jean Meyer in 1987, includes single varietal white wines that are expressive of their variety. Each wine has a label that depicts the wine as imagined by a recognised Alsatian artist.

Varietal Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris wines are produced from Josmeyer’s two Grand Cru vineyards. Vine-age these vineyards averages around 40 years old and in the best years they produce fruit suitable for crafting Vendange Tardive and Sélection de Grains Nobles wines.

Today, the company remains within the Meyer family, management resting with Jean’s daughters Céline and Isabelle.

  1. Oh, das war spanned. Elsass. Wine Traumgegend. Wir sagen vom Granit: Feldspat,Quarz und Glimmer, die vergess ich nimmer!

Das is die Magie des Goldes. Verwandelt spritzige Trauben in süße Birnen und Honig.

I would have expected Vanilla flavor instead of „Schmalz“ 🙂
