I’m Suzi, an American living in Dijon since 2008, and today I’m taking you on a deep dive into Burgundy wine, arguably the world’s greatest wine region. In this beginner’s guide to Burgundy wine, I’m visiting my brother-in-law Jean-Baptiste Cluzeaud at Domaine Cluzeaud in Volnay, where his vineyards span Chorey-lès-Beaune, Pernand Vergelesses, Fixin, Monthelie, Pommard, and Volnay. Whether you’re curious about how Burgundy wine is made, why wine lovers are so passionate about it, or what terroir really means, this video has the answers. Watch as we explore golden autumn vineyards and learn the secrets behind two of the world’s most celebrated grapes: Pinot noir and chardonnay.

  1. Have you ever visited vineyards in Burgundy or tasted wine directly from a winemaker elsewhere? Share your story below! 🍇🍷😊

  2. I've only been to wineries in the USA. Fun experience but I don't know how many of them actually do all the steps of growing the grapes to making the wine, unlike your brother-in-law. It's my understanding that some USA wineries buy the "ingredients" and then "mix" them to their own recipes. I was surprised to learn that.

PS I was questioning my grasp of French when Suzi said côte was slope since I always thought it just meant coast. Apparently it can mean several things as I found out when I googled it.

  3. An interesting history of how Texas saved the french wine industry. The French then used Vitis berlandieri rootstock, often crossed with European varieties like Chasselas to create hybrid rootstocks such as 41B, which proved resistant to both phylloxera and chlorosis (a condition caused by poor nutrient uptake in alkaline soils).
This method of grafting European grape varieties (like cabernet, merlot, pinot noir, and chardonnay) onto resistant American rootstocks became the standard solution and saved the French wine industry.
Even today, the vast majority of wine grapes grown in France and around the world are grafted onto rootstocks derived from American species, including those originating from Texas.

  4. Several of these points about grape growing, tasting, and wine making need in-depth episodes. I read the book about the extortion/poisoning plot of La Domaine Romanée-Conti vineyard near Beaune, Shadows in the Vineyard by Maximillian Potter.
