“La Soupe” – A French Wedding Tradition
In some regions of France, weddings don’t end with cake and champagne — they end with something far stranger. After the celebration, the bride and groom’s friends gather the leftovers from the feast, mix in drinks, scraps, and sometimes anything else they can find… all in a bowl — and traditionally even in a toilet bowl.
This bizarre concoction is called “La Soupe.” According to tradition, the bride and groom are expected to drink from it. The idea is symbolic: it shows that the couple can face life’s difficulties together, no matter how unpleasant.
Today, most people replace the gross mixture with chocolate and champagne as a playful twist, but the roots of the tradition remain one of the strangest wedding customs in the world.
