French Bread
Ingredients:
-2 tablespoons instant yeast
-2 tablespoons granulated sugar
-2 cups warm water (100-110 degrees Fahrenheit)
-3 tablespoons vegetable oil
-2 teaspoons salt
-6 cups all purpose flour
-1 egg
-1 tablespoon water
Directions:
Add yeast, sugar and 2 cups of warm water to a bowl and whisk to combine. Let sit for 5 minutes, until it is bubbly and frothy.
Add in the oil, salt and flour.
Mix to combine.
At this stage, if you are using a mixer, add a dough hook and knead on medium high for 4-5 minutes. The dough should pull away from the sides of the mixing bowl. If it doesn’t, slowly add 1 tablespoon of flour at a time and continue kneading until this happens. It shouldn’t take much. If you are making this without a mixer, use your hands to knead the dough on a lightly floured work surface for 4-5 minutes.
Place the dough in the mixing bowl and cover with a warm damp towel. Let it rest for 15 minutes.
Punch down the dough and divide into 2 pieces.
Shape each of the pieces of dough into a long log, like a baguette.
Place each of the pieces of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Optionally, score the dough with a few diagonal slits on the top.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven preheats, cover the tray with the warm damp towel and let the bread rise a second time.
Mix 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water in a bowl. Brush over the bread loaves.
Bake for 23-25 minutes.
