“Well I was born in the vats like we say in France and since I am very young, I always worked in the wine and in the vineyard and all the family’s in the champagne business also and since twenty years now, I have quite a good experience of vineyards and wine and I think it will be good enough to start in England.”

“We’ve done the research on the weather and since the last twenty years the weather is getting warmer and that’s one big important thing for the grapes and the second important thing is the soil. We find in this place its quite chalky like the same soil we have at home and the warm weather and the chalk is good for the Chardonnay and the Pinot Noir, both grapes we are planting.”

“I think the comparison between English Sparkling Wine and champagne is very valid because champagne is the great sparkling wine of the world. Every sparkling wine grower wherever they are in the world wants to make something that’s as good, or better, than champagne. Remember Champagne (region) is the nearest continental wine growing region to the UK. Its only 300 miles (482 km) away, you know we do have some chalk sites, our climate is improving and so if you’d like to say are we as good as champagne, the answer is yes. The best wines that we produce in this country are equal to some of the great champagnes.”

LEAD IN :
Belgian authorities announced recently (Jan 10, 2008) that they have destroyed a shipment of more than 3,000 bottles of California-made sparkling
wine as part of a New Year’s crackdown on illegally labelled Champagne.
In the European Union and in non-EU nations that recognize label of origin rules, Champagne can only come from the region of the same name in northern France.
STORYLINE:
Didier Pierson has been a champagne producer in France for the last twenty years.
