Have you seen The Last Duel?
LOVE Inglourious Basterds!! All the languages spoken in that film, except for Pitt's Italian LOL, was perfect! You could have analyzed the opening scene. How Landa went from French to English back to French was flawless. And Christoph Waltz speaking 3 languages fluently, plus that little Italian, was amazing. He deserved all the accolades from the film. Great Video, Merci!
Kudos to Cillian for keeping his Brummie (ish) accent into his French!
Any thoughts on Ty Burrell in Muppets Most Wanted?
And do you know about 'The Hollow Crown' – BBC adaptations of the Shakespeare History plays across the 1400s,, which have some with French actors playing French characters, and some not.
French is a second language in UK, so, in a premium TV series like Peaky Blinders, fake French would be a huge disappointment and would cause the viewing numbers to plummet. Inglorious Basterds and The Matrix (First one only) are two movies done to near perfection – absolutely superb! Christoph Waltz is a very great actor.
Québecois is such a distinctive accent, both in French and in English. Any competent dialogue coach would know this. An actor playing Québecois in a way francophone characters find believable needs to have that accent.
The Simpsons …. 7/10 😮 Noooo way, rather 2/10 !!
"lots of french sear words" 😂😂 Indeed, if they had translated all of them, the movie would probably have been banned in the US
Some years ago, I played a French (from Blois) woman's love interest in real life. We had many
giggles when I attempted French.
I realize I'm being kinda geeky here, but Henry V spoke French fluently – it was his first language, so why would the Dauphin speak to him in English?
Cillian Murphy IS NOT a Brit. He is Irish. It's like calling a French person Portuguese. HUGE difference.
In the movie ALLIED, Brad's character does correct Marion's character by telling her he's from Ontario not Quebec. In the film, she tells him his Parisian accent is terrible. LOL! Good film though.
Not French accent by US actor, but same kind of bad acting: Movie: Taking Lives, with Ethan Hawkes and Angelina Jolie + 2 relatively know French actors in North America. These 2 French actors are supposed to be Quebec cops. In one scene they speak french to each other, with a France accent rather than a Quebec accent. I was in shock since I'm from Quebec, and it made no sense at all.
5:20 Sorry to be an exception, Lucie, but as a bilingual Frenchman, I've watched this franchise in its original version, not even in the French dub. Nonetheless, I could easily accept the ridiculousness in the movie, given it isn't aimed at French audiences.
Thats always been annoying to me when shows do it badly and everyone acts like its great.
Like in the game Valorant. Killjoy is a german character. They hired a British voice actress though and she does not sound German… At all. Almost every other character has a voice actor/actress from the place the character or. (Or at least the person is fluent in the language of that characters origin)
I rewatched the movie "Ronin" the other day. Didn't remember that there was so much French in it. I think De Niro did quite a good job.
Hope in part 2 you review scenes in John Wick 4 where they're in Paris.
you should check out a canadian film called "bon cop bad cop" (terrible title, ok movie). Specifically a "cursing scene" from a bi-lingual anglophone ranting in french.
I mean, if the people who created Bridgerton don't care about historical accuracy, why would they care about language accuracy?
Finnish isn’t usually spoken in American (or any) films, but I love how in confessions of a shopaholic they had a finn for the scene where Rebecca (isla fisher) has to speak Finnish with a Finnish man, cause she lied she was fluent in it. Cause you can really hear if someone speaks it and isn’t actually a native. 😅
All due respect, I stopped caring about French pronunciation because I'm convinced that you French purposely complicate your language just so you can thumb your nose at foreigners (especially Americans) and feel elite. Especially considering that I've heard French people correcting people in English mispronouncing English words yet if you stop to correct them they act offended.
0:09 and when it is an Australian accent… It is always cringey… it is always bad. Not one non-Australian has EVER been able to pull it off.
00:31 O-fisser? 😕
9:42 This is the first time I have ever understood French. I need to watch the Simpsons dubbed in French 😉
10:14 And this is where I laughed out soooo loud… at you taking the piss about someone specializing in French pronunciation, when you yourself cannot pronounce pronunciation in English SMH :-/
As a French person, like you said, when it's clearly humorous or not meant to be taken seriously, I find it pretty funny (like the Key & Peele sketch, for example). But when it's supposed to be serious, with deep writing and great actors, I cringe so hard when it's done poorly especially when a character is meant to be a native French speaker but speaks with a bad accent, The Boys is a good example of that.
One moment that made me laugh so hard was in a Captain America movie (The Winter Soldier, I think), when a bad guy is called "The French" and has a French background but he's played by Georges St-Pierre, a Québécois MMA fighter. Hearing that thick Quebec accent with Quebec expressions just made me explode with laughter, ngl. 😂
It's like having a villain named "The American" who speaks with a heavy Scottish accent lol.
But yeah, most of the time big Hollywood studios just don’t bother. They know the majority of the audience doesn't speak French, so they don’t commit at all. It’s a shame not all movies are as dedicated as a Tarantino film.
Thanks for this fun video! You should do one for Tom Cruise’s French in the Mission Impossible movies 🙂
The King is the most stupid movie I have ever seen. They have a british actor playing a french character, and a french actor playing a british character. I mean come on, I know you wanted Chalomet to be the hero, but it's ridiculous. It took me out of the movie right there. At least Lily-Rose was a good cast.
Why does Robert Pattinson's accent offend you? I'm from Spain, and I've heard many French people speak Spanish, and they have the same accent, intonation, and way of pronouncing the "r" as Robert in the film when he speaks English. The fact that you speak English better without a strong French accent doesn't mean Robert is doing it wrong or is inaccurate. Knowing that Thimothée is bilingual in both languages and was his movie mate, it is most likely he helped him achieve the most realistic accent. The vast majority of French people who know little English or don't have an advanced level or even speaks quite fluently but they don't want to imitate the british or american accent because of the natural barrier phonetics issues and the natural different sounds existents in both languages, speak this way.
How about Kevin Kline in the movie "French Kiss"? 🙂
Since I'm french-canadian I really enjoy your video. In Star Trek the next generation, Sir Patrick Steward plays the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, a Starfleet officer from France. In the series, he almost never speaks french but when he does, it is so obvious that he is not. I try to be appreciative of the effort to speak such a beautiful language, but it is still a disaster. Thanks for the video. And as the french say : Putain de bordel de merde!
It is doubtful that the term 'Québécois' would have been used during WWII by someone from France since even we only started to refer to ourselves as such in the sixties (unless she thought he was from Quebec City). It is much more likely she would have called him 'Canadien' or 'Canadien Français'.
Cillian is speaking french with a Bermingham accent which is extra hard as he is Irish.
