I dont think its rude to leave food, esp if you were trying some thing new. BUT i do agree with the dont eat the last of something without making sure no one else wanted it too
I plan to eat it, take it but sometimes do not like something. I leave it and if asked why, I say it is not my taste. My friend should know me after all. I take food home with me. Makes her feel like a great cook.

It depends how much left over food. It’s it’s just a couple bites than no. But if it’s any more than that, yes.
