French fries didn’t come from France—they came from Belgium.
Villagers near the Meuse River were frying potatoes in the 1600s, long before the name “French fries” existed. Thomas Jefferson brought the idea to the U.S. in the 1700s after tasting them in France. Later, during World War I, American soldiers tried fries in French-speaking Belgium—and the name stuck.
🍟 The name is French. But the fries? They’re Belgian.
