This is a brief video made on a tour of the Perelada Winery – Here you see hundreds of French & American oak barrels with wines ageing in them deep in the cellars of Perelada’s splendid new winery. If you look at the ceiling you can see how the whole winery is designed to look as if you are inside a wine barrel! The spacious winery was designed by RCR Architects, winning the 2017 Pritzker Prize. It is also the first winery in Europe to achieve LEED GOLD certification for sustainability .The video was recorded during a visit in late March 2025.

Perelada are winemakers from Catalonia [Catalunya] in Spain. Based in the Emporda appellation, they are is part of a group that also make wine in a number of other regions including Rioja, Navarra and Priorat.

The estate has a rich winemaking history spanning over six centuries with wines originally being made at Castillo Perelada by monks from the neighbouring monastery.

The business was acquired in 1923 by Miguel Mateu who was the son of Damián Mateu, the founder of car makers Hispano Suiza. Miguel set about restoring the estates winemaking traditions which had declined after the mons left the site. The fourth and fifth generations of the Suqué Mateu still own and run the company.

Today There is a large, new, state-of-the-art, modern winery producing still wines from the Emporda region. The company owns five vineyard sites throughout the region : Garriga, Espolla, Garbet, Pont de Molins, and Malaveïna .

Perelada also has a substantial Cava producing division and owns the Fin de Siglo winery in Rioja. The Suqué Mateu family also runs Casa Gran del Siurana in Priorat as a separate estate. In 2017 Perelada acquired the Navarra-based Chivite Group, including all its wineries, giving holdings in that region plus Ribera del Duero and Rueda.
