Coca Cola was born out of a mix of pain, addiction, innovation, and a bit of luck. Its inventor, John Stith Pemberton, was a Confederate veteran who had been severely wounded during the American Civil War. To manage the chronic pain from his injuries, he became dependent on morphine, a common painkiller at the time.

In an attempt to break free from his addiction, Pemberton began experimenting with various medicinal formulas. Inspired by popular European coca wines, he created his own version in the early 1880s, blending coca leaf extract (which contained small amounts of cocaine, then legal), kola nut extract (a source of caffeine), damiana, and alcohol. He called it Pemberton’s French Wine Coca, which he marketed as a nerve tonic and stimulant.

But in 1886, Atlanta passed prohibition laws that banned the sale of alcohol. This forced Pemberton to alter his formula. While experimenting with a non-alcoholic version, he mixed the coca and kola syrup with carbonated water — either by accident or as part of a test. People loved the fizzy, refreshing taste. This new version became known as Coca-Cola, named for its two main ingredients: coca and kola (with a slight spelling tweak for branding).

Pemberton began selling Coca Cola at local pharmacies, promoting it as a medicinal drink that could cure headaches, fatigue, and other ailments. It was priced at five cents a glass and served from soda fountains. Though he saw some local success, Pemberton was in poor health and financial trouble. He gradually sold off portions of his business to different investors.

One of those investors was Asa Griggs Candler, an ambitious businessman who eventually acquired full control of the formula and company by the late 1880s. Candler transformed Coca Cola from a local curiosity into a national sensation through clever marketing, aggressive distribution, and mass advertising. Under his leadership, Coca-Cola evolved from a pharmacy tonic into the most recognized soft drink brand in the world.
