In today’s tasting Wine-Searcher’s wine Director, David Allen MW continues his look at the 2024 en-primeur wine from the Left Bank estates owned by the Casteja family. The wine he is looking at today is Chateau Beau Site, a Cru Bourgeois from the Saint Estephe appellation.

Château Beau-Site is an estate in the Saint-Estèphe appellation at the north of Bordeaux’s Médoc region. The estate was classified as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur until the Cru Bourgeois system was dropped in 2007. It makes a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines from beautifully sited vineyards overlooking the Gironde Estuary.

Beau-Site has cellars dating back to the 18th Century and is one of several châteaux owned by Bordeaux’s well-known Castéja family through their large négociant business, Borie-Manoux. The property covers over 100 hectares (247 acres) with roughly 35 hectares (86 acres) of vineyard.

It is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, which takes up 60 percent of the land under vine. Merlot is the second most-planted grape at 30 percent, followed by small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The château was awarded the status of Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in the 1932 Cru Bourgeois classification, before the system was annulled at the beginning of the 21st Century. Beau-Site has been in the Castéja family since 1955.

  1. I find that good Cru Bourgeois also being interesting for En Primeur, cause the cost saving is equally good, and the risk is smaller, so thanks for putting on this wine!
