I quite don't understand the logic of "my country did horrible things, so I must hate it", like if all the French were one and unique block of people who agreed on everything.
I mean, all nations, kingdoms, empires did "bad things"… yeah no shit, welcome to History, buckle up buckaroo.
Should the youngest generation be aware of that: yes, absolutely, it is part of our history. Should the youngest generation should be ashamed as if THEY were the perpetrators ? Now that's where I have a problem with this reasoning. Being aware of your country history is basic education, but it does not mean that you should be accountable for events you did not even know. Why should a 14 years old girl from 2018 should be blamed for what a 65 years old man from 1908 did? You can't compare the two period and because it is too easy to be "on the good side" of the moral with our contemporary point of view.
As far as I am concerned, I am not going to beat myself up for an event that I did not experience and even less committed…but at least I'm not denying the things we did, it is part of our history, take it or leave it.
