In our tasting today one of our Wine Specialists Ed Macintosh looks at a wine that is a classic style from the Barossa region of South Australia – a fitting wine to taste from a brand with its roots deep in the soils of he Barossa. Ed tastes and reviews the 2020 vintage of St Hugo’s Barossa Shiraz. Note this wine is designated as Barossa rather than Barossa Valley.
Sorry – there is some slightly odd distortion to the sound at the start of the recording, I hope you can still clearly hear everything Ed has to say!
St Hugo is a premium range of Australian wines named for Hugo Gramp, one of the key figures in the G. Gramp & Sons company that would eventually go on to create the Jacob’s Creek brand.
Hugo Gramp’s grandfather Johann Gramp planted his first vineyard in 1847 at Jacob’s Creek in the Barossa Valley. Gustav Gramp, Johann Gramp’s son, who named the wine business G. Gramp & Sons. Hugo Gramp took over the business in 1920 and ran it until his death in an aeroplane accident in 1938. G. Gramp & Sons was eventually renamed Orlando wines; St Hugo was launched in 1983 with a Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.
The business was acquired by Pernod Ricard in 1989. An impressive cellar door and highly regarded restaurant were established in the Barossa Valley in 2016.
The current wine portfolio includes a Signature range of red wines includes Shiraz and a Grenache – Shiraz – Mourvedre from Barossa, a Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cabernet Sauvignon – Shiraz sourced from both regions. In addition there is Chardonnay and Riesling from the Eden Valley.
Vetus Purum is a super-premium label that includes a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz produced in tiny quantities each vintage. In the winery, this premium range has a combination of French and American oak sourced for barrel-aging with a portion of new oak for added complexity.
Between these two ranges sit a number of Single Vineyard Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon releases. A fortified red is a longstanding fixture in the portfolio.
