Last month I went to Samoëns to ski, visit a wine festival, snow shoe, make patisserie and try my hand at ice swimming.
I was in Samoëns 10-13 January 2025, just in case you were wondering.

Samoëns is part of the Grand Massif, the fourth largest ski area in France. It links Flaine, les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval resorts and has 139 slopes.
The lift pass is free for children under 8 years old (in most resorts it’s free up to 5 years old).

I did all my skiing in grand massif growing up and it’s so underrated. If the
sixt run is open it’s one of the best and maybe the longest about. So peaceful

I appreciate your transparency re: the trip being funded by the local tourist authority – a sign of integrity. That dish you had the first night sounds like tartiflette's bread-based cousin – I bet it was absolutely delicious!

Recently found your site, and have started to watch regularly, we’re returning to skiing because the kids have left home and it’s more affordable. I particularly enjoyed this one. We’ve not been to the Grand Massif for maybe 20 years, must return soon (probably no swimming though 😝 ). 👍

The ice swimming did not feature any actual ice but I'm sure the water was frigid, here in Canada they have the ice water plunge where the ice, sometimes many inches thick is freshly cut in the lake above a few feet of water a fairly safe distance from the shore…..you then attempt to enter the incredibly cold water among the slushy ice without having a heart attack……some bravely or foolishly just jump (plunge) in. I only did it once for about 30 seconds and never again! Great video as always Robbie 🙂
Why are you so French focused? There is far better quality skiing and hospitality in Italy and Austria. Forget France, it’s so cliche and British to bang on about France.

I spent a lot of time in Flaine growing up and learning to ski as a child. We loved it , this was 30 years ago and you're right it was slaged off a bit.. but much more appreciated these days. I think I would take my children there sometime in the future. Oooo memories….
