The wine we have to taste today is a biodynamically produced red from the Costireres de Nimes appellation in Southern France. Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director, David Allen MW, is interested by the fact the wine has been produced by the Kreydenweiss family, who are better known as pioneers of Biodynamic viticulture in Alsace. The wine is fully mature, but seems to be holding up well.
The Kreydenweiss family trace their history in the Alsace town of Andlau back 13 generations. Since the 18th century, members of the family had worked the vines here and operated a mill. In 1945, Alfred Gresser ‘s daughter Denise married René Kreydenweiss. The Gresser family, were well known for making high quality wines and the couple took over the running of the domaine, transitioning it to the Kreydenweiss name.
Rene and Denise’s son Marc, took over the estate in 1971. A passionate winemaker Marc brought a whole range of new ideas regarding how to achieve the purest expression of his terroir. His ambition was above all was to focus on the management of his vineyards in order to produce quality grapes.
He quickly saw of biodynamics to be an obvious approach. In tandem with his son, Manfred, Marc became one of the first producers in the Alsace region to devote himself to biodynamic viticulture.
In 1999, Marc chose to establish a new estate in the Costières de Nîmes, buying a 6 hectare estate in Manduel (between Nîmes and Arles). Today the property is run by one of his sons Jean Kreydenweiss.
2008 was a year of changes for the family: The family’s eldest son Maenfred, aged 37, died in a forest accident. Marc moved permanently to the Costières de Nîmes estate, leaving Antoine to make his first vintage in Alsace. The estate in Costieres de Nimes has been cultivated biodynamically since it was established and is certified as such by Biodivin.
