Today’s episode of dedicated to a south facing hill on the Rhone river and a family who traces its 16 generation of winemakers all the way back to 1481. The place is of course the Hermitage (ermitage) hill and the family is that of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave.
We’ll look at the history of the Hermitage (ermitage) AOC and dive into the mythical Chave wines and try to understand why prices have skyrocketed in the last decade. Of course Pops and Stacey are ready to geek out – maybe even more so than usual.
Sit down, pour a glass, and discover the Rhone Valley with B, Pops, and Stacey.
Thank you so much for watching!

Whoa…. La Chapelle !!!
Great video! I hope you do more videos on the Rhone. Personally, a big fan of Cote Rotie.
Another great video. I love this channel! 🍷
Y'all do a great job of establishing a sense of place with all of the background and locational elements and that's like such an important part of understanding why a wine is special.
Wonderful episode as always. Thanks for sharing these experiences with us. PS try Rocks district syrahs…. they will have all the funk you could ever desire
Kvalitet! Quality! Thank you.
Awesome episode thank you!
I can’t believe I’ve tried a wine before you guys 😂
Love the addition of food to the content
Cracking taste in wine, learning a lot. Keep going!!
amazing video !
Hey, What corkscrew are you using? I love the purple handle!
I’m currently using a single pull and looking for a high quality double to go back to. Cheers!
if you like “funk” aka bret. you should try some natural wines. they are full of it😁 p.s. it should be a crime to have a vineyard in Rhone and not be organic, with that much wind, one should not be spraying at all😅 p.p.s. smelling wine, IS trying wine😊
Good tasting! I didn't know that prices have such skyrocketed! I found a bottle of 1990in my cellar two days ago – maybe, there is (hopefull)) more!:-) Cellartracker 95.9 point, Wine Spectator 98 points.
You 3 are awesome and just a blast to watch. Love these videos and even if I’m more partial to southern Rhône this was a great episode. Keep them coming!!
Another great episode as usual. Excellent balance of info, tasting, authentic reactions, and personality. Keep it up.
To B: Can you help Pops with his wardrobe? I love light blue collared dress shirts as much as the next guy but let's get him out of the office and into the wine cellar for these videos. Lend him some of your fashion sense.
Had the pleasure of Chave Hermitage ‘96, not 100% the price I paid from Wine Bid but I venture to guess sub $240 in 2016. Drank it later that year and it’s my #2 wine. I love seeing a purest rise to the pinnacle of their craft but sad to see prices skyrocket to $1000+ for aged Chave. I believe timing is everything in wine and love to chase the new regions, producers, hopefully keeping a few bottles in the cellar. Love your channel, love your passion, respect/appreciation for the wine you drink. Cheers!
Bravo!
Nice video!
I have the 04 Chave at my cellar. So happy to see your review.
Love your videos
Looking forward to visiting the Hermitage appellation this summer! Thank you for reminding why I planned that visit!?! Can’t wait now… 😄
I visted the hermitage appelation earlier last year. Was awesome! Very easy day trip from lyon
Thanksssss for the course on Chave and Hermitage ! Have some recent vintages in my cellar, so I learned also to keep them there for a while ! Love to drink wines young though. Nice to see the different bottle colors as well. Thanks for this episode again, loved it !
Nå må du få bestille deg noen nye vinglass! 😉
Thanks for allways good videos 🍷🙂
Gretings from Denmark 🥰
So…if I spend $1500 on a bottle of wine, I better wait 20+ years before I drink it? Hmmm, where’s my Gallo?
I was thinking about buying another Hermitage as I saw some Le Greal by Marc Sorrel for sale.
Nice to see Pops stretch his legs and explore outside of Bordeaux’s.
Thanks for another great vidio🥂🍷🍷
Woah, I just got a bottle of the 1989 for my trip to The French Laundry!!!!! I’m not someone with a huge cellar, so I was looking for some great wines to take and some friends at a local wine shop alerted me to a few bottles a client dropped off to be sold since they knew of my upcoming trip and lo and behold! So happy to see you guys review it🤩
Beautiful! You've all really lifted my mood this evening, I was on such a downer, lots of smiles, the beef looks sooooo mouth watering, brilliant addition to your show, I feel really involved, well done! I had beef and root veg with a little macaroni cheese tonite, a médoc, puisseguin, oz shiraz, oz cabernet, portugal blend, I'm off over to your port video now to catch up!! Any rioja planned? 😊
7:37 needs funky soundtrack 😂
add Ghost Horse Vineyards in Napa to the list of things to do
Love the videos! Would love to see a close-up comparison to the colours as well. Curious how they would look side by side
As someone who is very sensitive to brett (aka barnyard/wet hay/bandaid) when do you feel it’s moved from an enhancer to a fault? I love the cured meat/mushroom/damp earthy notes on top of the fruits and oak in my Rhône Syrah’s, for sure, but heavy dose of brett is not appealing.
Enjoyed this vid! Love Syrah!
Friend of mine served us one blind. He had just opened it, and did not give it any time to open before serving it to us. I had drank most of my portion (because it was so closed), before I learned that it's actually a 90s Chave Hermitage.
Oh I love watching vids about wines I could never afford, or would want to. I like the education but who gets to drink this? I like affordable wines that taste just fine. I guess oligarchs buy it.
Please find description and personal reaction. search for chemical sensory brain memory vocabulary. Liking is not the point. What is in the brain that reacts to the molecules? Not so much about how good it is. Wine lights up the ability to distinguish distinct related aromas. How it changes over seconds or hours or years matters most. Learning never stops. Push the descriptions. You say complex — so what — how many different impressions.?
This was an epic video!!! Amazing wine region, amazing wine selections. Thanks for doing it. Super impressed with your cork pulling skills on that 89. Amazed it stayed in tact. I really want to do a Syrah night with Beef Bourguignon soon now. Haha.
Also impressed the 2004 took 3 hours to open up. That is crazy.
Many years ago a friend organised an Old World vs New World tasting. The New World flight was a 1981 and 1982 Grange and a 1976 Hill of Grace. The Old World flight was a 1982 La Landonne and a 1978 La Chapelle and Chave! What a privilege but we all agreed that we preferred Syrah to Shiraz!! I do still have a bottle of the 1990 Cuvee Cathelin but would I be able to swallow it if I tried?? It's so pricey now!
