French Onion Soup is incredibly popular at US restaurants.
OK, a couple things went wrong with this recipe number one. You have to use a liquid measuring cup whenever measuring anything that’s with liquid. Seconds you needed a lot more broth. It’s supposed to be a soup not a stew. In the future get Julia Childs French cookbook if you want to learn how to make the proper French onion soup. I don’t think the cookbook was correct because that’s not how you make french onion soup and then you’re supposed to put the bread inside the broth with the cheese on top and then you put it in the broiler to melt that recipe was not correct. You might wanna research that and try to get it. Thank you guys did a good job, but that wasn’t correct. I look forward to seeing more.
For stale French Bread (even rock hard like you had) run the loaf right right under the faucet water (hot or cold doesn’t matter). Don’t be timid, though maybe avoid saturating exposed cuts/slices (but if water does get on those cuts this still works) then take loaf and place right on preheated oven rack. (300-325). Depending on how large the loaf set a timer from 6-12 minutes (Also if loaf gets saturated do the longer time). The water turns to steam and makes the interior tender and the heat will crisp up the crust to as good as new.
You can rehydrate rock hard bread. Put it under running tap water for a couple of seconds and then put it in a 300F degree oven for a few minutes. Don’t soak the bread, just like 2-3 seconds. The “croutons” should be a slice of bread rather than the chunks. Also, more cheese. The best part of a French Onion Soup is peeling off the melted cheese from the rim of the bowl! So glad you liked it, my go to soup if it’s on a menu at a restaurant!
I think I need to dust off my Test Kitchen book.
I'm a weirdo. I love French Onion Soup, but I always order it without the bread. I can't eat anything soggy. I still get the lovely cheese though.🤍
FOS is a restaurant classic here in Cda as well.
My mom and I used to watch Americas test kitchen together. I love it it’s super entertaining and some of the tips really help with all sorts of other dishes too 😊
Good looking soup. I see this soup often in steak houses. My experiene has always been that it is so salty. I think making it at home will fix that problem.
French onion is a family favorite, I even can it for quick meals.
Rather than croutons we toast thick slices of French bread, place in soup, top with cheese and broil it until cheese browns.
Yum!
One of my favorites! I’ve made it fully from scratch once. Since the bone broth craze in the U.S., beef bones are expensive. So I’d try to buy high quality commercially produced beef stock to bring the cost down.
It snowed last week and I sat by the window to watch it while I ate my French Onion Soup.
America's test kitchen Cook Book is the best.
2/10?
Absolutely love French Onion soup, except for the slimy onions. Always have to leave them on the bottim!
A friend claims I am a witch because I can cut onions without crying.
Yeah a cheaper version of it, and its great still.
When I was young, I never wanted to eat French Onion soup because I didn't like onions. Since growing up a bit more, I randomly decided to try it once at a restaurant and instantly fell in love with it. A lot of supper clubs where I live always have French Onion soup as an option.
In my 50 years of eating French onion soup; I have to say that yours looks pretty damn great! I prefer the bread like you did it; rather than a large slice. And when you layered the cheeses 🤌chef's kiss!! I will definitely try your recipe ❤❤. Thank you for all the hard work you do !! Much appreciated.
It looked fine but needs a lot more cheese. It should be oozing over the sides of the bowl after being broiled.
French onion soup is the best!❤. Great job!
You definitely should so a ATK Cook's Country reaction video. Also Christopher Kimball's Milk Street (he used to be on ATK Cook's Country) is another great American cooking show. ❤❤❤
Thank you for not showing the kiddo in the video.
French onion soup and menudo soup are my absolute favorites!
Great video, as always!
as far as America's Test Kitchen, HIGHLY recommend! Anytime you have a live audience, and they are all sitting there, raptly paying attention, and grinning like the cat who swallowed the canary, or at worse, the village idiot, you KNOW you are doing it right. Highly entertaining, as far as a food show…..
You've been hangin' with Cowboy Ken Mr. H. I recognize the jig. Yes, ma'am, that's mighty fine soup. Made it using two kinds of onions and shallots as well. Next time will add leeks for a little tweak. Used Pierre's recipe.
Nice video. I used to travel often for business and was always on the hunt for French onion soup. I found that diced onions were much less messy to eat resulting in fewer necktie stains! 🥣👔
Croutons (or thick slice of French bread) first, then blanket with Gruyere cheese, then broil.
The bloopers are so fun TCGB!
There is nothing that smells as good as the smell of onions cooking. There's an expensive cookware store here in the US, Williams Sonoma. They'll frequently cook onions on a stovetop near the cash registers, and people will just flock in to see what they're cooking. I think most people think they're going to get free samples of something yummy. It's a surefire way to get people in the doors!
YUMMY – yep. Canadian here, I adore French onion soup. It is so delicious. I haven't tried to make it yet, partially because I am entirely too impatient to properly caramelize my onions, lol. Cheers!
My favorite French onion soup was from the kitchen of a neighborhood tavern, that despite its small size, made some of the yummiest food. But I definitely would prefer the bread done the way you prepared it. You've just hit another one out of the park, friends! Your videos are always a treat, and they always make me hungry!
I pronounce it like Grew Year, but I'm probably wrong too lol
My favorite!!
America's Test Kitchen is a very good show. I like the older episodes personally. What is good about it is that they truly test different ingredients, amounts and cooking temps & types and give you the results. They also test different cooking pans, utensils, and other kitchen gadgets to show best brands for quality & price.
I believe gruyere is French cheese but you did make me laugh with your pronunciation.
I put dry sherry in my soup on top I put swisss and provolone cheese on top
The cheese likely added to the saltiness. Fun video; glad you enjoyed the recipe.
I'm surprised, as brits, that you hadn't had french onion soup before. Sounds rather like an American never having had a taco before. Was it out of trying to avoid French food?
Only eat close to home, but fantastic and my favorite!
"Gree AIR" cheese
My favorite soup. People are always so surprised at how amazing it is.
We haven’t just discovered French onion soup I was making it in the 1970s
I’m from Canada and I absolutely love French Onion Soup.
48yrs old and still have never tried it….never really sounded appealing before. Now I am curious!
That looks so good, well done! ATK/Cooks Country is the best, I absolutely love it! ❤
I could never eat it. Onions and I just don't get along.
Yum! I love to make French Onion soup in the autumn and winter. Love it and I’m so glad you guys enjoyed it!
French onion is one of my favorites
