Tick tock, tick tock!

In this edition of the xBloom #CoffeeAcademy, we challenged Caleb to come up with five interesting coffee facts in record time. And he delivered! Here they are:

1. Coffee is the second most traded commodity on Earth, surpassed only by petroleum. There are approximately 25 million coffee farmers in over 60 countries who rely on coffee as their primary source of income.

2. Coffee was originally discovered in Ethiopia and then spread throughout the Middle East. It made its way to Europe in the 16th century, but it wasn’t until the 1700s that coffee gained popularity in North America.

3. The word “”coffee”” originates from the Arabic word “”qahwah,”” which means “”wine of the bean.”” This term eventually made its way to Europe, where it transformed into “”café”” in French, “”caffè”” in Italian, and “”coffee”” in English.

4. Brazil is the world’s largest producer of coffee, followed by Vietnam and Colombia.

5. Coffee is actually a fruit. The so-called “”coffee bean”” is, in fact, the seed of a coffee cherry, which grows on trees. The appearance of the fruit is similar to that of a cranberry, and it possesses a sweet and tart flavor.
