Today’s tasting is of a Cru Bourgeois Wine from the Haut Medoc.Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director, David Allen MW tastes the 2017 vintage from Chateau Peyrabon. The estate deserves to be better known and the quality of the vintage is somewhat variable – however David finds the combination to be offering some great value for money.
Château Peyrabon is a Cru Bourgeois wine estate based in the Bordeaux commune of Saint-Sauveur, just west of Pauillac, in the northern Haut-Médoc wine region on the so-called “Left Bank” of the Gironde estuary. Unusually, the estate boastst vineyard holdings in both the Haut-Médoc and Pauillac appellations. A trio of red wines are made from Cabernet Sauvignon supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
The estate boasts 37 hectares (91 acres) of Haut-Médoc vineyard, covering soils composed of gravel, clay, sand, and limestone with vines averaging 25 years old. The chateau is located in this appellation, near the hamlet of Labrousse (itself just southeast of Saint-Sauveur), some 50km (30 miles) north of Bordeaux city center.
Two Haut-Médoc red wines are made from these vines: the eponymous “grand vin”, Château Peyrabon; and the estate’s second wine, Château Pierbone.
The château’s Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant grand vin is aged in 33 percent new French oak for around 14 months before bottling. Around 35,000 cases of Château Peyrabon are produced annually.
Finally, the estate’s third wine – Château La Fleur Peyrabon – is made from seven hectares (17 acres) of vines planted several kilometers to the east in Pauillac. Around 3000 cases are produced per annum.
The estate has a history dating back to the 18th Century with a château built in 1766. It was been owned between 1998 and 2022 by Bordeaux merchant Patrick Bernard, who sold it to BCAP, a group controlled by the Castéja family (owners of negociants Borie Manoux, Château Batailley and Château Lynch Moussas).
