Nestled in northeastern France, Strasbourg is the ultimate Christmas destination. Known as the “Christmas Capital of the World,” this enchanting city blends French and German culture, with storybook architecture, heartwarming culinary traditions, and small-town charm that comes alive during this special time of year.

This Alsatian gem transform into a winter wonderland every year, with dozens of Christmas markets offering food, drinks, handcrafted goods, and magical holiday vibes.

One of my favorite traditional plates here is the tarte flambée, it’s like a thin flatbread pizza topper with Gruyère cheese, thinly sliced onions, and crispy chopped pork.

Strasbourg is also the birthplace of foie gras. Back in the 1780s, a chef in Alsace created this delicacy by wrapping delicate crust around a rich farce of veal and bacon. It’s a must-try for foodies visiting the region.

Now, being in France, you know the food is going to be incredible. The aroma of warm, hearty dishes fills the air, making it impossible to resist. And perfect for this cold winter weather and last-minute Christmas shopping.
Here are my top picks from the stands.

Creamy potatoes with bacon or spaetzle with mushrooms – comfort food at its finest.

Knacks or currywurst sausages in all sizes and flavors.

Soft, doughy bretzels, often topped with Munster cheese, peppers, or even cured meats.

And of course, don’t miss out on the sweet treats –
There’s no shortage of gingerbread cookies, chocolates, and other handmade desserts.

And then there’s vin chaud, or mulled wine.
It’s infused with warm spices and fresh fruit making it the ultimate holiday drink. Nothing beats warming your hands – and your soul – with a cup of this Christmas magic.

Strasbourg’s Christmas markets are spread across 13 squares, with over 300 stalls to explore. Start your journey at Place Kleber, home to a 98-foot Christmas tree – the centerpiece of the city’s celebrations and one of the largest living trees in Europe. It’s truly breathtaking at night.

Next, head to the oldest and most iconic market – Christkindelsmärik – near the Cathedral at Place de la Cathédrale. Dating back to 1570, it’s famous for its artisanal gifts and traditional food stalls. Just be prepared – it can get busy, but the festive atmosphere is definitely worth it.

And if you’re traveling with children, be sure to visit the market near the cathedral. There is a beautiful 19th century carrousel that they will love.

From the Cathedral, take a stroll along the canal. This area is home to smaller markets with gourmet offerings, picturesque views and live music in a more intimate holiday vibe.

While you can explore the markets in a single day, I recommend staying a few days to truly immerse yourself in the magic of Strasbourg. From the twinkling lights to the incredible food and warm holiday spirit, it’s an unforgettable Christmas experience.
