In our tasting for today Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director, David Allen MW, tries a wine that is one of the most searched for wines from the Cru of Julienas, in the north of the Beaujolais region. The wine is Michel & Sylvain Tete’s ‘Cuvee Tradition’, fron their Domaine du Clos du Fief. This popular Julienas is from the 2021 vintage.

The domaine traces its history back to the 1920s when Francois tete began producing bottling and selling his own wines in Julienas. Francois built up the estate to a size of 6 hectares. In 1978 Francois’ grandson Michel joined the business – Michel, built the domain’s vineyard holdings to 14 hectares, adding vineyards in Chenas, Saint Amour, Moulin-a-Vent and Beaujolais Village vineyards in Juille. The name Domaine du Clos du Fief was adopted in 1988.

Michel’s son Sylvain Joined his father in the business in 2014 and together they aim to make wines that emphasise terroir and tradition. Many of the Domain’s vineyards are close planted, low-yielding old-vines. The domaine’s approach is to practice sustainable viticulture, they do not apply herbicides, preferring to grow grass between the vines and do not apply pesticides.

  1. Ah, cru Beaujolais. One of my favourite vfm wines. I have a few, mainly 2019, 2020 and 2022, put by. A mature Moulin A Vent or Morgon can be every bit as enjoyable as a decent Burgundy at a quarter the price.
I once spent a wonderful day with friends walking the Beaujolais hills, calling in at the odd winery for a tasting.
