As you probably guessed, California wine is wine that is made in California. The state accounts for 90% of the wine produced in the United States. If it were a separate country, California would rank as the fourth largest wine producer in the world.

Wine production in California began in the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted vines to make wine for Mass. Since then, the industry has grown immensely, and there are now over 1,200 wineries in the state. About ¾ the size of France, California is often divided into four different wine regions: the North Coast, Central Coast, South Coast, and the Central Valley.

Most California wines tend towards the fruit-forward “New World” styles, owing to the warm weather that allows producers to use riper fruit. These wines first achieved major fame in 1976 as a result of the Judgement of Paris, which was a blind tasting event where the most prominent French wine critics rated California wines higher on average than wines from the Bordeaux region of France.

We are proud to call the state home and look forward to continuing our exploration of this incredible wine region!
