00:00 – Opus Wine Tasting Intro
00:00 – The Story of Opus One Cult Wine
00:00 – Tasting & Review
Opus One is one of the world’s most famous wines, and among the most expensive produced in Napa Valley. The winery was initially established as a joint venture between two of the biggest names in Bordeaux and Napa Valley: Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild, the illustrious first growth of Pauillac (you can learn more about why Pauillac is so good in my dedicated video here) who partnered with Robert Mondavi, the biggest California producer at the time. Opus One was the first premium California wine to break into the European market and to be sold in Europe. It is one of the original “Cult Cabernets”, like those of Harlan Estate, Screaming Eagle, etc. The idea of Opus One was conceived some 50 years ago in the 1970s and the first vintage was produced just a couple of months before I was born 1979, and released in 1984. So the hype around Opus One has been going on for 40 years, it’s time to put an end to it, or not. Opus One’s global reputation continued to expand substantially through the 1990s and it’s survived the sale of Robert Mondavi to Constellation Brands in 2004. THIS is one of the most iconic NEW WORLD WINES

Could only see it in a locked VITRINE.
Thank you Julien for brining it closer to wide public!
love your wine talk. I like your criticism, the introduction of various wines, and your score, which I agree with almost every wine. I am a big fan of you, and hope more people find your video.
I am a new subscriber in thr USA and thank you for your video and educational contents. Can you tell us more about how you handle the wine before you taste?
Thank you! Always wondered if it was worth trying. Based on your review I think I will spend that $500 elsewhere.
500 is way out of my budget for wine. I’m not a fan of an oak taste as you demonstrate in the taste test but from your review, sounds like it may just as good as a less expensive brand.
best clip yet i had o1 3 times-remember amazing quality of fruit here early 90's it was 1st american wine costing over 50 bucks! matches top clarets hands down!! cheerio
So…a better wine than Opus is one that is lousy to drink now but will drink better in 10-20 years?? Who comes up with that nonsensical rating scale?
You should move all the wine videos from your other channel to here
Been watching more and more of your videos. Lots of knowledge and appreciate the honest reviews
I have had this wine to me it's 98 points
I wouldn’t pay 5 or $600 for a single bottle of wine. I’ve had $50 wines that are better than any thousand dollar wine by far. You’re just paying for the label at a certain point.
I have a case and didn't cost 500 a bottle
Excellent review as always. What can I say? I would never spend £500 on a bottle of wine. I don't begrudge anybody that wants too but for me it's obvious that most of that money is to join an exclusive club. I'm sure it's very good wine but the price is ridiculous for what's in the bottle. There are a lot of rich people that can afford it so I suppose it makes no difference to them.
I like what you say about very fine wine and the integration of flavours to create a harmonious whole. That's exactly what happens to very well aged whisky and you will only ever taste that style when you buy old whisky over 20 years old. The same principle applies though. How much better is a quality 24 year whisky compared to a quality 19 year whisky? Is it worth twice the price just to try it even though it's just a tiny bit better? Here's the thing, it might not even be better but just different. When you spend £500 on a bottle of wine your brain is going to tell you it's amazing to justify the spend.
I love the rationale of your conclusion and completely agree. I have a couple of genuine 100 point wines and I'm not joking. The first is Valdespino Toneless which is the definition of 100 points although it's obviously not traditional wine but incredible value for what it is. The other is Toro Albala 1946. I paid far less than £500 for these a few years back. It's quite easy to get a 94 point for £100 or less in Spain. I know Opus One is good but it's for the rich and/or deluded. WT
Tried Opus One lately…. Overrated not worth the price, never again for me. Save your money and go with something nice like a Chateau Margaux or like a Vega Sicilia Unico.
I had the Overture, second wine. Cost 250 euro and it was good. Was ik better then Some other good usa wine. Dont know. Both were good,
When opus was only $120 it was a very nice and enjoyable wine. These days opus has completely out priced itself and I would much rather drink an off-vintage first growth over it; any day.
Of course most of Napa has out priced itself these days
I tried it in 1998. I can’t remember the vintage. I remember the mid palate structure was beautiful, tannins and oak in harmony and the fruit was black fruit, very long. Wow! It’s one of the best I’ve tasted, up there with Vega Sicilia and a 64 Gevrey Chambertin. I count myself fortunate.
Hi! Let's talk about cremant wine next time. I tried cremant from bardeux, it was amaizing. I smelt very big pino noir character but wine was white (brut, white but seem to be a little bit red, not rose). Please tel us typical grape varieties for each cremant wine and its' character. MERCI!
please share your experince how much wine is enough and how to support liver. plese
