Ingredients:

• 3 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
• ½ cup milk
• ½ cup cream
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 1 teaspoon chicken powder
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 2 teaspoons thyme
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
• Salt, to taste
• 1 cup grated cheese (any preferred type, like Gruyère or cheddar)

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.

2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes (about ⅛ inch thick) using a knife or mandoline slicer.

3. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add milk, cream, chicken powder, garlic powder, thyme, black pepper, and salt. Stir well and heat the mixture until it’s warm but not boiling. Remove from heat.

4. In the greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle a portion of the grated cheese on top.

5. Add the remaining potato slices in a second layer. Pour the remaining cream mixture over them and top with the rest of the cheese.

6. Cover the dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes.

7. If you plan to finish cooking tomorrow, turn off the oven after the initial 30 minutes, let the gratin cool, then cover it and refrigerate.

8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the gratin from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes. Bake uncovered for another 20-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

9. Let the gratin cool slightly before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
