For our tasting today Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director, David Allen MW asks if this could be one of the most exciting Chardonnays being made in Chile at present? The wine is from the cool southerly region of Malleco and is produced by a company owned and founded by some of France’s most highly respected winemakers. This exciting wine is Vina Aquitania Sol de Sol Malleco Chardonnay 2022.

Viña Aquintania is a Chilean wine producer, founded in 1990 by Bruno Prats and Paul Pontallier. Located within the city of Santiago, it produces a a portfolio of wines sourced from both the Maipo and Malleco Valleys.

Prats and Pontallier were joined by Fellipe de Solminihac is acquiring 18 hectares of land in Peñalolen within Santiago. Following the first plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine cellar was completed in 1993. From January 2002, Ghislain de Montgolfier came onboard as partner or what he referred to as ‘the fourth musketeer’.

The flagship wine of the Aquintania portfolio is the Lazuli Cabernet Sauvignon. After a hand-pick in the vineyard, pre-fermentative maceration in the winery takes place for six days prior to an inoculation with yeast. It then spends 16 months barrel-aging in new and used oak.

Prior to Lazuli, the flagship was known as Paul Bruno Cabernet Sauvignon between 1993 and 2000. After a 20 year hiatus, the Paul Bruno has been re-released alongside the Lazuli as a limited edition.

The Super Premium SOLdeSOL range of wines includes a varietal Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Noir as well as a sparkling blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The Aquitaine range completes the portfolio.
