For our tasting today, Wine-Searcher’s Master of Wine David Allen, our Wine Director, tastes an organic and biodynamic vin-doux-naturel (sweet, fortified wine) made from Muscat in the Rivesaults region. The wine in question is Domaine Cazes Muscat de Rivesaltes 2021.

Michel Cazes established his family domaine in Rousillon in 1895. In 1927 they purchased Mas Joffre, the former property of First World War leader Marshal Joffre. by 1950 the family had acquired 40 hectares of vines and in 1955 they stated making and marketing wine under their own label.

The family have been making their wines using organic and biodynamic methods since 1997 when Emmanuel Cazes, Michel’s great grandson joined the estate. In 2005 they achieved both organic an biodynamic certification for the whole estate.

The estate now comprises 220 hectares of vineyards, The soils are predominantly Clay and limestone with some schistose materials and siliceous pebbles. These terroirs lie at the heart of the Rousillon region, at the crossroads of the Agly terraces, straddling the villages of Rivesaltes and Salses-le-Château.

The estate makes wines from no less than 12 different varieties making both table wines and fortified wines from Cotes du Rousillon, Cotes du Rousillon Villages, Fitou, Maury, Muscat de Rivesaults and Muscat de Rivesaults. The wines produced are table wines and fortified vin-doux-naturels whose production combines modern winemaking with ancient traditions.
