Meet James, who moved from the southeast of England to the south west of France and has made his home in the wine region of Lot-et-Garonne. He lives in a small bastide village that has its own cinema, bank, post office, and schools. Only 20 minutes from the thriving town of Bergerac, it’s a far cry from the 2 – 2.5 hour commute James used to do when he worked in London!
James realised early on that he needed help from people with experience in French administration, which is why he asked French Connections HCB to handle his initial visa application, registration into the French health service, driving licence exchange, car registration and residency permit.
Discover ancient fortified villages in the area James now calls home, each one different and each with something to offer. As he tells us with a smile, “If you had time, you could go to a different market every day of the week!” James also recommends a lazy canoe trip down the Dordogne, passing picturesque villages like Roque-Gageac. ‘It isn’t hard. Even if you do nothing, you still move at two kilometres an hour!”

I commute from Guildford to London so fully understand his desire to move! Hope to make a similar move!
James, I was really struck by your decision to switch from village to countryside after trying full-time village life. I think so many folks do not give time to that simple type of decision of living amongst or living apart, and once done, also start to view it as totally fixed and immutable! Glad you kept it flexible and finding your groove there. It’s amazing you have so many services right in Castillones. Cheers
