In this recipe from the Apicius collection, small fish, f.e. sardines, are marinated in olive oil, fish sauce and wine, cooked inside the marinade with herbs (which are later removed) and served with pepper.

You need: sardines, olive oil, fish sauce (garum / colatura di alici, or Asian fish sauce), wine, a twig of marjoram, a twig of rue (optional, better to leave it out if you are pregnant), black pepper
