It’s our last stop in this five part series, discovering the best 3 Michelin star restaurants in California.
We started with Atelier Crenn, checked out Single Thread, went to Quince and Benu and now, we are here to visit the most famous fine dining restaurant in the USA, The French Laundry.
This is a Thomas Keller restaurant. Chef Keller is the first and only American-born chef to hold multiple 3 star ratings in the Michelin Guide.

My name is Alexander. I’m the co-owner of a ONE Michelin star restaurant, and I’m on a mission – to find inspiration in gastronomy. I love fine dining, good wine and sharing what I know with other people.

so genuinely tricked by that restaurant Jesus ‘account’!😂
Another awesome video, still googling without success what a diodine is
10:04 – the italian brunello… waiter: "very soft, elegant …". Alex: "spicy and intense …" … well, which is it? :)) haha
You missed Southern California 😂. I loved this series
That looks like a bunch of cold snacks mixed with a dirty hangover from mixing all kinds of random sugary alcoholic beverages. Pass.
You should be saying NORTHERN California instead of just California. There are many other great restaurants in southern California (Los Angeles).
Top notch video as always, sir. You're good at this.
Shame you didn’t do manrasa
enjoyed this series!
Been there and done that. I prefer Japanese Omakases, way healthier.
Best of the Californian five restaurants
Sadly due to extreme allergies to shellfish (Crab and Lobster in particular) I'll have to watch their menus to see if I can ever safely enter their buildings! But thanks for recommending, "Atelier Crenn, checked out Single Thread, went to Quince and Benu and now, we are here to visit the most famous fine dining restaurant in the USA, The French Laundry." Someday, I hope to be able to try one of them! Great series.
A very good video. Thanks a lot. Perhaps it may be a good idea to take some advanced English pronunciation lessons, British English is best as it gives the most status but you need to know both BE and AE. It will make your videos so much better. Mostly, it is just the choice of which syllable to stress that needs some adjustment. E.g. "events" is not pronounced as "éeffnts" but as "e-vénts". Other words I heard accentuated on the wrong syllable are, right after "events", unforgettable (should be unforgéttable), acidic (should be acídic, not ácidic), and so on. Perhaps it is because the Hungarian language is so different from the Roman-German language groups, or perhaps because Alexander is so rich that nobody dares to say anything to him that he may not like (one of the principal problems a rich man runs into. It prevents him from learning new things or getting correct feedback and sensible answers).
Does not look appetizing at all. I hope that the taste was better than the presentation
Your videos never disappoint. The expert reviews and commentary combined with the deep research and ultra high production values definitely put this in my top 5 foodtube channels.
West is Best!
@10.00 :
Waiter "very soft and elegant 2018 vintage"
Alexander "it's spicy and intense"
Yeah. All this high-end wine tasting is kind of bs isn't it, it all comes down to personal taste rather than price and label
The French Laundry is an amazing example of how set and setting can affect the dining experience. I've eaten at TFL and Per Se, and honestly found the food to be fairly similar (I think TFL has a slight edge). But while my experience at Per Se was somewhat underwhelming, dinner at The French Laundry was one of the best dining experiences of my life. The history, the sense of place, the sheer monumentality of the restaurant, combined with absolutely perfect service-it was divine. Even when a couple of the courses fell a little flat (this is relative of course, a 7/10 Thomas Keller dish is still pretty damn good) it didnt matter, it somehow didn't deteact at all from the overall experience. It was a meal I'll remember for the rest of my life. Glad to see TFL is still going strong after all these years.
Please explain to me why on earth anyone would want to eat food made by people with no interest in the true nature of food and its true roll in society (bringing people together despite social status) and instead focus on feeding the very worst people to attempt to masquerade as human beings, egos so pompous and distorted they may as well just walk around with both middle fingers extended in the faces of everyone working class.
Why would you want to drink wine that was grown and produced by the most evil reprehensible family on the face of the earth? Sort your lives our
Excellent series. I wonder if the same could be done in Paris or another region (of France)
its refeshing to see time being taken to recognise the staff, not just the famous name above the doors, of these restaurants – the industry needs more of this!
can we talk about that incredible plate that caviar dish came in? i want one of those
Isn't this gentleman the greatest storyteller???
He gives credit, where credit is due..
He teaches us, where teaching is necessary and he gives us an experience to feel it together.
X employeee here in the comments.
Just a small heads up your menu isn’t what every guest enjoys , the 4 cold snacks before hand coming from the canapé section means you were probably listed down as a Red VIP . So your menu is longer and has a lot more intricate bites and touches along the way . Still one of the best restaurants I’ve cooked at !
🤩🤩🥰🥰👏👏👍👍
Love you Alexander, but please use a bright lens for filming the meals, because the video is often dark and I find myself trying to adjust the brightness of my screen
Where to start. Sadly this place is what people who know nothing about Cali cuisine come to clout chase. Keller is a hack more like a Disneyland figure in the fine dining world. California cuisine was revolutionary at one point but when you such a shill you can’t even include Cali sourced ingredients like the state bird or the SB uni in your bs menu you just a status symbol like a Rolex catering to tasteless clientele who have to formulate their opinions on fine dinning based on what’s popular than on what’s good.
How the heck did you skip Addison?!?
The first and only video that made me cry.
Who's the absolute Chad having a birthday meal at French Laundry by themselves? That's what I want to know
tbh it is too minimalistic for me
Any plans to visit the final 3 star, Addison?
Always a pleasure to watch this channel.
Funny, Alexander has been to all the 3* places in NYC (in fact there are now only four since Kitchen Table shut). Surprised he didn't like Per Se.
As someone who has been to all of the current four 3* places, I'd personally say:
Le Bernardin:
Food: 9.5/10
Service: 8/10
Dining space: 8/10
Value: 8/10
Per Se:
Food: 9/10
Service: 9/10
Dining Space: 9/10
Value: 7.5/10
EMP:
Food: 8/10
Service: 9.5/10
Dining space: 8.5/10
Value: 6/10
Masa:
Food: 9/10
Service: 8.5/10
Dining Space: 8/10
Value: 4/10 (you will likely spend $1,000 per person all in)
The ones on this Californian tour look better. I'd still like to try TFL one day.
Doug is the dad
1:59 that’s the City of Napa, and the Napa River, not Yountville.
They still do gateau marjolaine. AWESOME.
Shoutout to Brighton! You can tell he is an excellent host.
The French Laundry is incredible, I was blown away by the service, food and hospitality! Also, their garden across the street is amazing as well!
So glad you were able to experience the California 3-Stars, but it’s too bad you couldn’t have visited a few years earlier when we were the crown of US Michelin with 8 3-star restaurants at once, and 9 in total over a few years time. Saison is still around & maintains 2 stars, while Coi, Manresa, and most tragically The Restaurant at Meadowood have all closed. Meadowood, especially, is heartbreaking as it was lost during the Glass Fire of 2020. My wife and I got engaged there, and it was an incredible evening. Hoping that Chef Kostow will reopen eventually…
Wait, I am confused. Boudin Noir is a blood sausage. Not grits. Is this correct?
what an excellent video to end this amazing trip..
Just an fyi, this isn’t the typical French Laundry experience. This looks more elevated than the meals I’ve experience twice. But honestly, it’s great to see what the service looks like when they’re at the top of their game, especially with the content this channel provides.
It is SUCH a joy to watch your clips! Each one is a piece of Art… in so many ways! I adore how you appreciate the people, the story and the small things. Wonderful! Thank you!!!
6:52 Just a heads-up – Junmai is a kind of sake, not a place! It seems like it's actually made near Toyama.
A historical note to The French Laundry is that it is the restaurant that on November 6, 2020 Governor Gavin Newsom held a 50th birthday party for a lobbyist named Jason Kinney. This was during the height of the pandemic lockdowns and his demand that residents in the state stay at home, avoid gatherings, wear masks and observe social distancing. But in a "let them eat cake" moment he and other guests were photographed while partying as if thsee rules didn't apply to them.
You should produce less videos. At this rate how is the channel viable? Just post 1 video per month like other big channels
I remember when gavin newsome was there while he was telling us to stay home due to covid
