Marseille, formerly Massalia, is one of France’s oldest cities, founded around 600 BC by Greek settlers from Phocaea, modern-day Turkey. It became a thriving center of trade and cultural exchange between the Greek world, Iberia, and Gaul. Marseille prospered through commerce in wine, olive oil, and ceramics, attracting diverse merchants and cultures. It faced challenges from Celtic and Ligurian tribes and sought Roman protection during the Punic Wars. Roman influence brought infrastructure improvements and cultural assimilation. Despite periods of turmoil, Marseille’s Greek heritage endures in its architecture and cultural traditions.

People forget the violence behind Greek and Phoenician colonization. The natives are cleared, colonization is always by force. Archilochus made a poem of defeat and running from natives when Paros took colonies.
