Rachel Martin joins us now she’s the founder of a women powered Winery focus on sustainability and mindfulness thank you so much for joining us uh and good morning to you so first uh tell us about your Winery and how you’re able to create these non-alcoholic wines how does that process work and how comparable is it uh to ones that can actually leave you with a little bit of a buzz or a lot of a buzz depending on the day well good morning to you thank you so much for having me my name is Rachel Martin I’m the founder and CEO of Oceano wines and these are our non-alcoholic wines under the name Oceano zero I’ve been making wine and growing grapes since the early 2000s and I decided that I would get into non-alcoholic wine because I didn’t find anything in the marketplace that was of high quality so uh so that’s how Oceano zero started I love that so I I was uh pregnant just a couple years ago and I had a lot of friends who were pregnant at the same time and this was very popular it was looking for something that you could socially drink with others of course minus the alcohol uh so so I think it’s a really cool uh industry and little sector of it so why is non-alcoholic wine more expensive than what we would see with our traditional wine well there’s an extra step first of all with Oceano we grow our grapes on the coast of San Louis abiso California it’s a very high quality Vineyard so you’re starting out with an expensive wine and then when you get to the wine making process um that’s me doing the The Grapes um we actually are making our wine specifically for uh our non-alcoholic wine so that’s Extra Care during the aging process and then the really the extra step that you’re talking about is the alcohol removal so once we uh finish the wines and they’re ready to go we remove the alcohol with a machine called a spinning cone column and that gently extracts the alcohol but it also reduces the quantity of the finished wine so we end up with 30% less of what we started so that’s one or a couple of examples on why it’s more expensive it’s a more difficult uh wine to actually produce wow that’s really interesting so we have two varieties of your Oceano line with us today so walk us through uh the Chardonnay first okay so this is our um 2023 Oceano Z chardonay Spanish Springs Vineyard and what’s unusual about our non-alcoholic wine is on the label you’ll see a vintage and the vineyard designation as well as the region that’s very uncommon so we um handh Harvest our grapes they are grown sustainably and are certified so um we ferment in French Oak barrels and then it goes through sorry I’m getting a little technical it goes through malolactic fermentation and that’s when we um change the harsher acidity to a softer acidity softening the body of the wine right um age for six months in French Oak barrels what we say on the leaves so on those yeast proteins and we um do a little bit of Le stirring so that’s turning the yeast proteins back into the wine to uh create body that is independent of the alcohol right well it tast that is how our chardonnet yeah it it really tastes great we don’t have time to go over the Peno uh but I I’m sure the tastes amazing as well founder of Oceana wines and Oceana zero Rachel Martin thank you so much for joining us and providing some really great insight into this Market that we would not have known if you want to learn more about the wines that we tried today right here uh you can visit Oceano wines.com all right
