In this video I am going to open, taste & see what is so special about the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine that made history at the Judgement of Paris in 1976.

[Music] hi everybody this is agnesa from no sediment and today let’s open taste and see what is so special about Stag Leap Wine sellers cabern suon SLV why is this wine so legendary to find out we must go back five [Music] decades Stags Le Wine sellers was established in 1970 by ven vinarski who was of Polish descent he was so passionate about what he did and what he wanted to achieve that he made history as we will see later the SLV Vineyard planted by vinarski also in 1970 became famous with Harvest of 1973 these only three-year-old wines and their fruit made history in blind tasting now famously known as Judgment of Paris which was organized by the late Stevens perier in 1976 it was considered mad at the time because some of the France and really world’s greatest wine labels would be tasted blind alongside less known and newly developing wines of California the judges were some of the leading experts in wine industry and most of them French wines tasted at that event were Bordeaux style Cabernet svon based wines and burgundy style Chardon wines and to a great surprise of everyone at the time Stags Le Wine sellers SLV estate Cabernet sovon 1973 received the highest score leaving behind such names as muton rild and auon originally when Californian wine making scene was just starting to develop the area of Stags Leap on the Eastern side of Napa was mostly used for growing other crops and was not closely associated with wine a few wines were planted but they were not the most quality oriented grape varieties currently Stags La district is home to some of the most sought after and prestigious Estates of Napa and actually one of the very first to discover the potential of this area was Nathan Fay and his original Vineyard Fay currently neighbors the famous SLV Vineyard nowadays the SLV plot does not contain these original wines anymore I have looked up and it seems that the oldest vines in the SLV Vineyard are from 1972 block 4 followed by 1993 and 1995 plantings the SLV soils are our mixture of volcanic and aluvial and while Summers can be quite hot and dry the area receives some of that cooling effect in the form of fog coming from San Pablo [Music] Bay as mentioned before grapes for the original wine that shook the world came from newly planted Vineyard SLV meaning Stags sleep Vineyard the 1973 vintage was actually blended with small proportions of Mero which is sometimes done to round in the edges of Cabernet sovon which could otherwise be very structured and quite dense unfortunately I do not have here 1973 vintage nor have I ever tasted it however I do have the 2012 vintage which I bought directly at the estate many years ago according to them it is 100% Cabernet so and a fun fact the 1973 vintage was released at aate price of $6 per bottle while current price of this bottle is around2 200 now that we know the legend behind this wine let’s taste it and see what is so special about it h it is a deeply colored serious wine the actually quite interesting on the the color it does not say it is 12 years old I mean it is Ruby and there is this slight hint of garnet on the otter Rim but that’s it probably by looking at the color I would never guess that this is 2012 vintage this is 12-year-old wine this is something that I’ve noticed with Bordeaux and I’ve noticed with Napa Cabernet a lot is that these wines always always seem younger than they are and on the nose it is quite perfumed it does show these really ripe black fruits like ciss and blackberry black cherries hints of Plum but there’s layers and layers and layers of expensive wood like tobacco leaf cter wood there’s even some minerality to it like crushed stones or graphite some herbal hints like garig yeah the nose is definitely quite complex it is not something that is onedimensional you know like fruit bump which sometimes you can expect in some of the Napa wines uh definitely not this style so let’s taste it wow on the nose it seemed really rich and and kind of this Ultra ripe but when you taste it you have this nice backbone of acidity it is definitely refreshing it is is full bodied wine but it does not seem you know heavy in any way the acidity lifts it up tenants nicely done beautiful tenants and I think this is something that I’ve noticed in in Californian Wines in general the tenants are always much more approachable in their youth they just seem riper and here of course you feel that there are a lot of tenants but they’re really ripe they’re kind of rounded and uh definitely not edgy or spiky let’s taste that wine again one thing though it does have that warmth coming from Sunny climate so I do feel that alcohol a little bit but then again this was my first sip on this day so maybe I’m a bit sensitive that could also be the case but I do feel a bit warming sensation sitting on my palette I think it is amazing wine and what a surprise that I mean being 12 12 years of age it is still so fresh and Lively I don’t think it could live for another 20 years but I think next 10 years eight 10 years would be quite easy for the swine the reason behind is because tenants are actually quite matured at this level maybe after five or six years the presence of Oak could calm down allowing fruit to shine a bit more but overall I think first this wine repres represents greatly where it is coming from it is sunny it is warm and uh it just shows that fruit ripeness which we all love which is why we go to Napa and the second of all this wine shows great aging potential there’s not a lot of wines that can age for 20 or more years and I mean this is it is still so generous it is you know not really tired at all and it is 12-year-old wine so amazing I will give this wine 92 points when I was reading about Judgment of Paris many wine experts actually place this wine in France I not necessarily think that it tastes of France I think it represents its Tera which great wine must do you want to know where it’s coming from when you are tasting it when you are smelling it and I think that is one of the greatest parts of a fine wine it is a great legacy to the label and the wine maker varen vinarski who unfortunately just recently has passed away but his Legend and his idea and his dreams are still living on let me know in the comments if you have tried this wine what you think of it or maybe there are other wines I should pay more attention from Napa and make sure to watch my other video what’s so special about SES Kaya [Music] [Applause]

have to admit, never understood cal cabs
You met Steven Spurrier? What was he like? What a neat touchstone to wine history! I have only had a tiny taste of Stag’s Leap Chardonnay at a wine festival, not yet been able to splurge for their cab!
Wow, a little out of my price range. We like a lot of wines at our Costco that rate in 90s as well. I personally like the Kirkland Malbec (has a 91 ratting) Thanks for sharing this , really like to hear people appreciate good wines. 🙂
I would love to try some of those classic Napa producers but the price always sends me elsewhere. I'm sure some of them are incredible, though.
Every time I watch one of your videos, I want to open a bottle of Wine!
Agnese my darling , your totally different style of approaching wine appreciation is so new , funky and fun to watch regardless of how many times i promise myself that will stop , please continue to continue , you have a lot of avid watchers out there and Yes I love that oyster tee shirt ! LOLOLOLOL , from an old Chablis lover since the 60's in Auxerre , sometimes age is partially worth it
Didn't know Spurrier passed actually. 2021 RIP. He drank a minimum of one bottle every day if memory serves. Also the Stag's Leap guy was actually named Winiarski! That's kind of like a dentist named Rootcanalski 😄
PS: You should have had one of the Paris bottles.
this is what happens when you harvest at 28brix😅
Tried SLV, Fay and others at their tasting room last month when I visited Napa for the first time. SLV was my favorite of the tasting but wow the price! Still excellent though.
Great bit of Napa history! Another California Cab at the Judgement of Paris tasting was Heitz Martha's Vineyard. Single grape variety from a single vineyard, which was quite an unusual approach to winemaking back in that day. It is my personal favourite when it comes to Napa Cabs. Hard to find and certainly not cheap, but would be well worth reviewing if you come across a bottle.
Have you read the story about "Stag's" Leap and "Stags' " (apostrophe after the s) Leap? Both established in the Stags Leap district and called "Stag's Leap". They fought over the name and it went all the way to the Supreme Court of CA and the final ruling was the placement of the apostrophes would distinguish the two, with Winiarski getting the apostrophe before the "s". Both are great wineries, but I lean towards "Stag's Leap" for same reasons you mention in the video.
Why put a cork the other way round? 😅🫣
The SLV is a gorgeous wine, but will show better in the 2013 & 2014 vintages. After the poor vintage of 2011, many producers chose to hang more fruit and made wines that drink better early. As a collector of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars wine, I prefer the Cask 23 a bit over the SLV, but hold both in my cellar. For a real treat and expression of the AVA, try to find a 2013-2014 Hartwell T5 Cabernet (now owned by Realm). Side by side with the SLV, you might be surprised.
We celebrated paying off our house with a 2013 Stag's Leap Cask 23. It remains one of the best Napa Cabs we've ever had. Side note – the 2019 Stag's Leap Merlot is amazing! 🍷
Great video!
Awesome!!!
Tu mums visiem esi liels dārgums, Agnese. ❤️
A marketing phenomenon. Like totally Californian
A 92-point wine for I believe you said $250? I think I'll pass 🙂
Now you have the make a video about Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 😉
Very nice video. I took their Estate Collection tasting in 2022, including the FAY, the SLV and the Cask 23. Really exceptional wines, the best I had on my short visit to Napa and among the best I’ve ever tasted.
Agnese, tu esi pie visa vainīga, ka esi mans mīļākais vīnzinis visā plašajā pasaulē, un tā būsi vienmēr. 🍷 🥂 ❤️
