Louis Pommery Brut NV-$20-Thinking French-Drinking California

I was about to buy a $14.99 Trader Joe’s Reserve Sonoma Sparkling wine when I remembered there are Napa/Sonoma outposts of celebrated Champagne Houses.

The Louis Pommery sells for $20, and it’s Champagne big brother is CHampagne Pommery, the creator of Brut Champagne.

I do not know a damn thing about Trader Joe’s Reserve Sonoma Sparkling wine, $14.99.

But I know a great deal about  Louis Pommery Brut NV at $20!

welcome um it’s domain day from cheap
wine finder.com um with a party edition
of cheap wine finder
reviews and uh there’s a reason behind
this one um we recently did a Trader
Joe’s Reserve northern northern coast uh
sparkling wine it was 999 and they also
had a um Trader Joe’s Reserve Sonoma
sparkling wine the North Coast was
$9.99 and the Sona only Sonoma was $4.99
15 bucks and you know was it
worth 50% more cuz the $9.99 was really
good I liked it and I started thinking
about it and I was going to go to Trader
Joe’s and pick it up and you know do
what I do and tell everybody about it
cuz there are people who want to know is
it worth spending an extra $5 and I
started to think thinking you know
there’s a bunch of champagne houses who
have Wines in California they have
Vineyards they have wineries there’s
uh there’s Shandon there’s a piper
there’s mums there’s teden and there is
the one I grabbed is a Louis
Pomer California brute a non-vintage
sparkling wine made in the same style as
the do and
champagne where palie was uh the house
the they call Champagnes not wineries
but houses I think they even do that in
PCO was prco house and um it was founded
in the early 1850s and when the
um the head of the family passed away
Madam pomy invented brute sparkling wine
before that I guess everything was a
little bit sweet with enough acidity
it’s not like um Moscato wine it’s
still you know still balances acidity
balances sugar but she’s the one who
made brute palar so Palmer’s got a
really um good history and it is an
outstanding champagne and they’re fairly
new
to I think they’re located in Napa I
think
2004 and the same wine maker who
oversees the champagne wines is overseen
the uh Cal wines they don’t tell you a
great deal about the wine I’m going to
take a sip cuz I got champagne in my
hand or bubbly sparkling wine in my
[Music]
hand they’re vague about what’s going on
and that’s fine it is
95% chardonay 5% um P Noir and I saw an
interview with the wine maker and at
some point they’re still getting their
their Vineyards they’re still getting
everything
figure it out and at some point they
want to be all chardonay they want to
make it a just a expression of
California chardonay I would imagine the
P Noir is there to kind of smooth off
any rough edges that the uh the
chardonay might
have so and uh what else oh there is um
they don’t tell you where the grapes are
gr they they have an estate in
Napa and I reading up on it in resurgent
the P Noir that 5% P Noir came from
caneros which is both Sonoma and Napa
but most of the stuff’s on the Napa
side and so they have an estate is some
of the grapes come from the estate I
mean I do believe they’re contract
Growers but high-end contract Growers if
you get pal uh as one of your customers
that goes on a good list you know you
you don’t just get anybody doing that
and another thing uh I just kind of
found out in researching things on the
bottom of the bottle there very bottom
of the end there’s these white stamped
letters and it’s a code for when the
first fermentation started and when
they got rid of the yeast and stopped it
and corked it and I think it’s 3 years
in Bottle it could be a little bit less
but um I’m not sure here I try to read
the code I’m not an expert at reading U
sparkling wine codes but it could be
anywhere from 33 months to 36 months
which for a $20 wine is an extraordinary
length of time especially one with a A
History uh of Palmer um champagne which
is one of the best houses they use the
same type of yeast program now it’s
California grapes as opposed to um
champagne
grapes so it’s going to be different you
know in Champagne the the the a Vineyard
can be a th no a million dollars an acre
I mean it’s crazy the Chinese were
buying things everybody was buying and
that’s one of the reasons why Champagne
cost as much Nappa is almost bargain
priced by comparison let think let sip
CU drinking bubbles I’m not going to
pull
[Music]
around so your California show
and P Noir is going to be different than
your
champagne Chardon and P Noir
but California shardan P Noir especially
from caneros and some Napa maybe some
Sonoma I’m not sure maybe some mesino
they don’t really say where it’s some
pretty fine chardonay I mean you’re
talking some really great grapes so
you’re not you know it’s not not like
they’re suffering to get finding
something decent so this this is you
know so it’s not a champagne cuz it’s
using California grapes even though the
same wine maker and the same production
techniques are all being fulfilled it’s
not the same and it’s not supposed to be
because the grapes are completely
different um the location location
location changes everything when it
comes to
Wine but that doesn’t mean it’s it can’t
be you can’t like it as much or even
better you know but for the price I
think you know shamp P HS higher Highs
but for $20 and I know the um other
champagne houses the rotors and the
Chandon and the uh mums and the piper
were all a couple of bucks even cheaper
it’s hard to I mean they make great
wines they just do and it’s hard to say
that value you know dollar for
dollar that they aren’t delivering as
much enjoyment as a typical French
champagne I mean it’s everybody’s
preference but these things Rock So
Trader Joe’s you know I don’t know where
you’re from I don’t know what your if
it’s your Wine’s worth $15 I suspect
it’s probably great and at some point
this month I probably will go out and U
try it but you know I’m just now
thinking that when in doubt hit one of
these French houses um that are in in
Napa and Sonoma or wherever and really
bringing its H strong with some really
great wine
so that’s a that’s a tip to you if
you’re looking for champagne style and
but West Coast California
prices yeah here we go uh Lewis pomar
California brutes the the inventors of
brutes make a pretty fine bubbly so
that’s it for me domain Dave chewi
fighter.com like us where you like your
podcast if you will every little bit
helps and uh we got more coming every
couple days until New Year we’re going
to be pumping things out because of
party is on so adios stay uh stay safe
stay warm and stay healthy and I’ll be
talking to everybody byebye
