if you’ve watched some of our previous
Vlogs you would be familiar with our
simple Cottage project gone off the
rails it’s turned into a full-blown
renovation all of the beams need
replacing we paid a visit to the local
Sawmill to ask if they could cut some
Oak beams for us and we were pleasantly
surprised they could fabricate them and
be ready in about 10 days now we
wait so these are fur logs that our
neighbor farmer donated to us it was a
tree that fell in his uh field I asked
him to cut it to 4 M lengths so we could
have it cut at The Sawmill for our floor
in the cottage when I was there ordering
the beams I asked him about if he would
be able to to cut the wood for
[Music]
us Welcome to our Smalls side project
we’re working on while we wait for the
beams to arrive this keeps us occupied
and out of
[Music]
trouble I’ve been yammering on for well
over a year about expanding the garden
beds and the two of us could not be be
trusted to create them quickly enough it
was just too much work so we called in
some
[Music]
help yeah this is a bigger project than
uh it it looks on paper you know you
think oh yeah I’m just going to put
three extra garden beds in but there’s
measuring there’s digging there’s just a
lot
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
so Lincoln was thinking he might want an
olive tree oh I think it would look too
messy in the wall
Garden yeah I love an olive
tree okay so why are we
[Applause]
here well we’re looking for a tree of
some sort to put in the center of the
garden I’m not sure
what it’s a tough decision what are
these These are well these are olives
too but see these are more like
topiaries which I like those are nice if
you keep them a certain
shape yeah look how pretty the
espell what kind of fruit is this that’s
Apple these are Apple espell this is
what I’d like too oh yeah those
are those are really pretty
this is a
fig I would like a fig
tree that would be
cool that is massive and mature how
beautiful is
this those are beautiful those are
figs that would be nice on the side of a
barn or something wouldn’t it these are
actually really pretty and I discovered
these are a black
Elder and we have Elders growing all
over our property but they have green
leaves and they produce a white flower
instead of this purple one and you can
use the flowers to make like Elderberry
wine and spritzes and things which I’ve
done in the past this is actually really
pretty
[Applause]
this place is massive
[Applause]
these are
pairs that’s not a bad price look at
that
€18 for this beautiful pear
treay okay we don’t want to hurt the
fruit cuz we actually have fruit on
these
you sit in between here okay a fig tree
in your hair you’re going to be able to
drive like
that I mean the fruit is right there
yeah
okay and so just peed on our fig tree
okay so this has to go I don’t know how
we’re going to get all this done I think
I really need to take a deep breath

visit betterhelp.com ourf French chatau
or choose our French chatau during sign
up and enjoy a special discount on your
first month our plan is to create a
small raised bed in the center of the
garden for our brand new tree
[Music]
the idea is to have a point at the
center of each of these
right cuz we’re thinking it’s slightly
seems a little l so what Lincoln is
saying is that if he takes a foot off
that would
replicate the dimensions this Square
this Square
yeah basically
roughly and you like everything to match
up oh I think that way you think that
way yeah I get it
the
[Music]
of course it’s raining now of course
like
hard
oh I told I asked Lincoln I said you
might need to get a pry bar and uh no
don’t think so I’m just so strong yeah
you’re very viral and
manly so I am here for paint for the
garden beds but I thought I’d stop and
look at the
floors for the
cottage just to see what they have
so this is your way of starting the
weekend a 12 24 pack of beer no 20 20 b
of
beer and some
flowers here we are day two of trying to
get this Center garden box completed and
it’s sort of um has some hiccups so we
had to go out this morning to get some
proper screws for Lincoln and he managed
to find the correct ones and then by the
time we went back to the Garden Center
to pick up a few lavender and of course
the kids texting can you pick me up this
so we had to stop at the store so we got
an early start today it took us 3 hours
round trip uh to get everything done to
get our errands done really a crummy day
today it’s cold and it’s going to
drizzle and hopefully we can get this
finished
did you do that on purpose sort of
okay so it’s in the proper place now
well yeah it’s basically there doesn’t
look okay to you the the tree’s crooked
so that’s throwing me
off now after I dig in we’ll be able to
move it around but it’s almost it’s just
about there yeah we’re getting soaked
out
here yeah
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
while Lincoln was digging out the trench
for the center bed I was planting seeds
and adding some support poles for our
our future beans and cucumbers
[Music]
[Applause]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
pretty
good well that’s cuz I have a good eye
no you have a terrible eye you’re good
at
measuring but I can see the center of
something yeah I think that’s
good yeah let
good okay you were a little bit freaked
out by getting a fig tree because of the
way they’re pollinated in the wild I had
only seen that recently yeah that uh why
don’t you explain what you saw they’re
called fig wasps they basically is
born inside it because eggs are laid in
there and then crawls out and dies and
the eggs hatch and then they crawl out
and live there are wasp bags inside of
the Fig every fig at one point had wasp
wasp eggs in it and baby wasps that
eventually crawled out and is that what
the little crunchy things are in the in
the Fig when you bite into them they are
pretty crunchy well I read about it and
um just briefly but the the commercially
grown figs they’re not they’re not
pollinated that way obviously um but
that’s why you can have just one of
these you don’t need exactly so with the
Fig Tree you don’t need to have more
than one uh like apples and and pears
and because the wasps pollinate it when
they crawl in right don’t kill the Wasps
because they’re
pollinators and as much as they might be
a hassle to you yeah they’re they’re
they’re good it’s part of nature
yeah so don’t kill those
wasps yeah
in this bed I’ve added some logs around
the edge then covering with compost and
soil the logs take up space and will
eventually
decompos this method is really helpful
if you have deep
beds for
patunas okay the little these and then
that’s alysum and that’s the one that’s
going to that’s sort of spreads and
that’s cool yeah they self seed and they
sort of multiply every year
[Music]
should I start creating
bespoke bracelets bark bracelets you can
have maybe I’ll start creating
these does it fit let’s
see okay it
fits so if anybody would like one of
these creations I think I could sell
these but body wants it I’ll I’ll sell
it to you I’ll ship it to you thanks for

Hi 👋🏻, I love your videos and work you two are doing. I know that fig trees emmit carbon instead of oxygen unlike other common types of trees, that’s why they should be planted away from graden and habitable areas as they “suffocate” others. and they seed like crazy.
Hi Lincoln and Amanda…. Sorry, It’s me again!!! (Sue UK)….. Just a thought… bearing in mind your humour + gardening / raised beds and self sufficiency… I would like to recommend a very enjoyable Utube channel called Plot 37… which is an ALLOTMENT ( ie a great British’ quirky Institution’… where gaerdeners can rent a decent plot of land ( very cheaply) from the local council to grow veg/ flowers etc etc … very popular during WW 2….’Dig for Victory’…and very necessary!!…,This Plot is rented by a mother/daughter team…Jessie and Mom… Apart from many raised beds, fruit cage, plot tunnel, shed, chickens and a resident Allotment Cat called ‘LIL’…. It is both quirky, funny ( in a mad British way!) but very varied and full of hints, tips and clever use of loads of unwanted and repurposed ‘things’… and so many different types of produce!!’…..The plot is situated in the London area… so just across the channel from you in Brittany… with very similar weather.too 😱..Anyway.. maybe you might like to watch it… in one of your odd minutes of not ‘renovating’ the Chateau … Think it might appeal to you ???…. 😳🤫🤞…weekly episodes on Tuesdays… currently on about episode 212!!… all year round…but you can look at the whole lot if you want to???…,,
The walled garden is looking amazing! Hard work, especially in the rain… May I just mention that I think your fig tree is planted too deep. The final soil level around the trunk should come no higher than the level of the soil in the pot from the nursery. The part of the trunk that is now covered may rot, especially in your damp climate. As for fig wasps, they aren't 'ordinary garden wasps' but a completely different insect.
Love the fig tree and expanding garden! Beautiful!
You need to get making a massive compost heap so you can get free soil
The two of you work so hard and are not even thwarted by the relentless rain that seems never ending in France this year! The garden is looking amazing and I can't wait to the fruits of your labour in the summer. Bravo! And I hope Lincoln drank everyone of those beer or maybe you shared them. Whatever you so deserved them!!! Cheers
Lovely gardens but do Enzo and Guava tend to run wild in your gardens?
So glad you chose a fig tree! My favorite!
Your fig tree is lovely- however when it grows, it will be big and cast shadows over your garden, no? Or maybe I just can't see the relationship of the tree to the raised beds. I like the idea of the tree in the center area… hope it works!
If I wore the bark bracelet, I’d rip my face off the first time I scratched my nose!😂😂❤
I am thrilled to see you did a little geometric design in your garden, on axis with one of your buildings. May I suggest you buy 2 of the espaliers you saw, plant them to either side of the center of that building, then someday find a wall foundation to put in the middle with a wonderful bench in front of it? Second, please buy your flooring from or have it milled at your local sawmill, like the beams. How absolutely fabulous, the gift of the wood and the price!! I know you have trees somewhere that you can mill up. That's what all those buildings were made of – carry on the tradition! Love, Your Architect.
You may want to create a well around the fig tree to guide water to it, with the alyssum planted just around that rim. Second, pull the soil away from the bark at the base – this might cause new roots to string up above its existing roots.
So amazing that you have someone to mill all the wood for you. This is becoming so rare in the States.
I love your sense of humour! Hilarious idea to wear such a rustic bracelet!!!
Love your channel. Even when you go shopping it is interesting. It is fun to see how they do things in France.
$18 barely gets you a shrub here. Home Depot was asking $14.98 for one strawberry plant.
Your garden is beautiful!
No tree in beds. Too large will throw shaade. You have a ton of room for trees.
Your vegetable patches and the new arrival center piece makes it a joy to watch.
I have learned the hard way that if you have pets that shed lighter floors are the way to go dark floors are beautiful but show absolutely everything. Lighter floors would also add a brighter and more cheerful environment. You are doing so much. Take care of your backs at all cost and they will take care of you. You are both amazing. I admire you very much. ❤
I always feel guilty as I sit and watch you two work so hard 🙂 the garden area is looking beautiful !
Loving the new drone footage. One bracelet for me please 😄
The thing about the North American way of planting trees is based more on aesthetics, rather than the natural way trees grow. In their natural environment, fig trees don't grow in a raised, boxed bed. Often you see trees planted with a lot of soil going up a foot or more up the trunk – to make it look nice. This stresses the tree and it will sprout roots at the highest level of the soil rather than sprouting stronger roots at the natural soil level, which weakens the tree. You many already know this but a trees most important root system is just under the soil, where they radiate outwards to bring nutrients to the trunk. Usually there is one larger anchoring root that makes the tree stand tall and strong to withstand the elements. Often in NA, you see people covering the areas around the tree with decorative rocks (!) and thereby covering and smothering this delicate, life-giving root system. So, in short, a tree doesn't need a raised bed! Please don't view this as a criticism: I love your videos and don't have a garden anymore so love watching you two build yours! take care.
❤❤❤ your channel….
Donkeys named Uvia, in Spanish lluvia means rain ❤ ❤❤
Where are you guys!? We look so forward to your channel. It’s been over a week! We miss you!
