For our tasting today, Wine-Searcher’s Wine Director, David Allen (MW), tastes a 2023 en-primeur sample of Chateau Siran in the drawing room at Chateau Siran. He uses the wine to illustrate how there are many really lovely wines across the board in this vintage that should provide some lovely drinking at the right price.

Château Siran is located in the far south of the Margaux appellation, producing wine principally from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate dates back to a land grant from the church to Guilhem de Siran in 1428. By the end of the 17th Century, wine was being produced and Siran developed its reputation during the 1700s.

Previously the property of the great-grandmother of the painter Toulouse-Lautrec, it has been owned by members of the Miailhe family since 1859. Only a handful of Bordeaux properties have remained in the hands of the same family for such a long time. Current boss Edouard, who took over in 2007, represents the seventh generation.

The estate owns 25 hectares (62 acres) of vineyards within the Margaux appellation, planted to 46 percent Merlot, 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 13 percent Petit Verdot and 1 percent Cabernet Franc. The estate also owns 9ha in Bordeaux Supérieur, on the border with Margaux on alluvial clay over gravel, plus a further 2ha in Haut-Médoc. S de Siran is the second wine of the property, also from the Margaux appellation, while Saint Jacques de Siran is a Bordeaux Supérieur.

Grapes are picked by hand into small crates, and rigorously sorted before and after de-stemming. The fruit is vinified on a plot-by-plot basis in temperature-controlled vats and aged in French oak barrels. Overall production totals around 10,000 cases per vintage.

The winery and cellars were renovated in 2014, and the cellar used to old museum bottles is, in fact, a nuclear shelter built in the 1980s to withstand the possible failure of the nuclear power plant at nearby Blayais.

hello there today I’m at chatow Sirin in
the Southern
medok and I just wanted to talk about
something that I actually think is one
of the important points to realize about
the 2023 vintage and really that it’s
just across the board there’s a lovely
ripeness to all these wines I don’t
think I’ve seen a single wine so far and
I’ve tasted for a week here that’s had
any of the sort of the leafiness them
foxy notes that in the past were pretty
classic for Bordeaux so I I think one of
the points to to think about is that not
only the top points but right across the
range there are going to be some
exciting wines they’ve got lovely
perfume and good acidity Maro is one of
the places where that’s really evident
so this is the chatow Ser
2023 obviously it’s a an a sample so a
barrel sample that still has to spend a
bit of time in Oak and we’ll be prepared
and bottled in about a year I suppose
but looking at the wine as with many
many wines it still has a sort of purple
note to the color so it’s a sort of a a
red purple with a bit of vivid purple at
The Rim it’s beautifully staining the
glass actually so there’s there’s a nice
intensity of color but at the same time
I mean it’s by no means opaque it’s
probably of sort of medium
intensity the wine has 14% alcohol so
although alcohols are relatively low you
know 14 is still fairly normal
we’re not getting to the 145 so%
that’s and they don’t seem as obvious
because of the Wine’s lovely acidity so
so let’s see what make of the AR
Sean I have to work a little to find the
Aromas at this stage but once you do you
get down some really lovely lifted red
fruit perfumes the wine has s of a
lovely note of rasbury of loganbury
you’re looking at Maly notes
you know you have to look for them but
there’s a lovely fruit Purity there at
the same
time tasting
it first thing you notice is a really
lovely freshness it really is a key to
this vintage but as I say it’s not
coming alongside a
leafiness there’s a ripeness behind it
you got to find F tenons there a nice
concentration of fine tenons there that
actually are quite chewy I mean fruit
wise it makes me think of Elder berries
in terms of the they’re small berries
with a a large amount of skin to juice
in terms of the nature of the wine this
is much more red fruit this is mulbury
it’s fresh and that freshness is giving
it a lovely
length now this is a wine that will
spend more time in Barrel so that it
will gain a little bit more Oak notes I
guess
but at the same time there’s there’s a
nice fine structure of Cedar on the
Finish now about 14% alcohol just add a
little bit of warmth and it’s just
peeking up the um sweet spices on the
Finish there are touches of Cedar there
are touches of
cinnamon with a sort of an underlying
vanilla it’s all nicely integrated but
that’s sort of sitting along the Finish
there the acidity is giving a nice long
finish the alcohol is well enough
balanced it’s not overpar the fruit so
youve got a nice clean fresh finish as I
say these wines have freshness I suspect
that means that they’ll be able to last
long they will structured they don’t
have huge concentration so it is places
like Margot that typically have Elegance
that are really showing sort of beauty
here now this what particular wine I
believe 49% Mero 41% cevan and then
there’s 10% of ptiv Vero so you’ve got
some good acid acidity and freshness
coming both from the cabinet and the p
know that these lovely lifted Aromas
that are so typical of the 2023 vintage
SO vintage that if you want will age
beautifully at the same time I think
many of these WIS will be very
approachable from the Geto almost
certainly from quite a young age so

  1. Love the vids but pls sort out the sound. Also…a few times u spit out wines in front of camera, we don't want to see this! We can see and hear the spitting more than the talking. Pls take as constructive criticism…I watch all your vids. Cheers
