In our tasting today our Wine Director, David Allen MW, has selected, what was for him, a standout wine from the set of excellent Margaux wines offered at the Union des Grand Crus tasting for 2023s from Margaux and the southern Medoc. The wine in question is Chateau Kirwan 2023.
Château Kirwan is an estate located in Margaux, in the southern Médoc, some 30km (18 miles) north of Bordeaux town center. The estate was classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux wines.
The château is named after Mark Kirwan, an Irishman, who acquired the property from Englishman John Collingwood in 1760 after marrying Collingwood’s daughter. He built the château and put his name on the label to make it easier for merchants to identify and sell his wines. Despite losing the château in the French Revolution – and reclaiming it under Napoleon – the Kirwans sold the winery in 1827. It was acquired by the Godard family acquired Kirwan in the latter part of the 19th Century and expanded the holding. Current owners – the Schÿler family, who came to Bordeaux in the 18th Century to establish a wine merchant business – bought the property in 1926.
Château Kirwan is situated on 40 hectares (100 acres) of the Cantenac Plateau on the Garonne River. In fact, the property sits on something of a rise 20 meters (60 feet) higher than the rest of the plateau at its highest point. Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant variety grown here, thriving on the gravelly soils of the area, while Merlot enjoys more clay-based soils on another part of the property. Some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are grown as well.
Château Kirwan believes in minimally invasive techniques in the wine cellar, calling winemakers “wine helpers” instead. The wine is aged for 20 months in 40 percent new French oak, allowing the quality of the fruit and soil structure to shine.

hello there today I’m lucky enough to be
at the UN de Grand Cruz Omer tasting for
M go and the southern medok so this is
at chat LA Lagoon in ludong and I just
picked out a wine that I found really
quite impressive this is a shatter
keran and sometimes I find keran can be
uh a little on the structured side and a
bit impenetrable but actually maros this
year are Shiner sort of a beautiful
Elegance of fruit fabulous perfumes and
you know Cohen is doing well to stand
out of a line out of some really
enjoyable
wines so looking at the wine what’s
what’s caught my interest it’s got a a a
beautiful deep dark purple red color
it’s virtually opaque so um not all the
wines had quite that much concentration
of color in terms of the Aromas though
it has a spectacular intensity of fruit
and quite a spectrum of fruit Aromas a
lot of the wines had a quite a red fruit
Aroma but
this I mean this wine is 65% cabinet so
and the there’s a the fruit initially is
very sort of black currenty and then
moves through a spectrum to sort of
black berry Logan B and there are some
red fruit Aromas in there as well so
slightly spicy red fruit so Logan B
raspberry sort of note as well
so you’re going through inspectrum but
there’s a good intensity of rooms so for
Taste now there’s a lovely suppleness to
the tanins on lot of these
wines there a fair grip but they’re
actually quite I’m saying chewy they’ve
got a a density that’s not as stringent
it’s not
drying but it’s providing some nice grip
there and again you’ve got all that sort
of lovely black through to Red Fruit
note the alcohol isn’t impinging on the
on the fruit it’s balanced the acidity
lifts it again at the end so you run
through a sort of a a dark black Plum
note through this sort of more more
brambly through the black current notes
on the Finish where it’s
juicy and you’re not getting Cedar oak
impinging on this wine yet I mean it’s
still a barrel sample so um in a a
year’s time it would have taken perhaps
a little more
Oak but there’s such a lovely array of
dark fruits supported by really good
acidity and able to show through because
the alcohol is not too high so I think
this is a wine with great potential its
acidity its structure should allow it to
age and there’s so much bursting fruit
in there but I think this could be a
very interesting bu for the Ono campaign

Super interesting, definitely one to watch, the pricing of kirwan is usually very fair, so if they drop the price 30% more, this will be a bargain, and that's what en primeur is all about isn't it?
Thanks for your excellent review!
