Today, we had our brand new garden furniture arrive here in the south west of France, the Charente.

We have worked really hard since we moved here in September 2023, to set up our home both on the inside and the outside.

Summer is almost upon us, and we intend to spend a lot of time in our garden. We love BBQs so we have bought a huge one, we love eating outside, so we bought a table and six chairs to eat on, and we love love relaxing with a wine or three, so we have bought a sofa and chairs to sit on outside.

Join us on our journey of living in France within our first year.

Oh, and the tv show show, A Place in there Sun actually found us our dream home here in France. And we are due to film a follow up show in July 2024.

  1. Perhaps a few large spikes in the stand would help keep the parasol more sturdy when there is a little wind.

  2. Build a stone wall round the palm tree a foot or so wider, take the wood sides off and fill the sides with sandy soil, job done. They only have shallow roots so that would also stabilise it. Scoop up the molehills and put it in the raised beds, it's usually good soil. Just saying.

  3. I would turn the couch so that the right end (when sitting) is on the side of the house. So the sitting group would ”open” and not like the furniture is quequing.

  4. Everyone is having Mole problems for some reason, try spraying Castor oil around the areas that they frequent

  5. My wife & I really enjoy your videos, Rob. Can you recommend a hotel in the area to stay? We've been searching for a house in Brittany and moving to the Charente next. Having a difficult time finding a decent one. We need pet friendly, traveling with 2 Maltese. Been staying at the Brit Hotel in Brittany, some are nice and others aren't. Holiday Inn in Paris was good, but trying to find a hotel not downtown due to parking issues. Have a larger rental car due to all our luggage. TIA

  6. Greetings par Ecosse!!!

Nice Meubles de jardin mate, very Gucci and looks like it won’t break in a wind!!

Molehills, they are nice clean soil, just take your barrow round and scoop them in to add to your raised beds. Traps are used in Scotland to catch them but depends how woke one is!!

Loving the chat as always 😊🎉

  7. Hi Rob, the furniture looks great! My thoughts on the palm, (is it a Chinese windmill palm?) I think it will look amazing near your furniture with some solar lights twinkling in it and wound around the trunk. So, that would mean re-pot it, I guess. 😊 Or if you decide to put it in the ground, wait until autumn after it has rained, the ground will be softer for digging a big hole and the winter rains will help it settle in. If you put it in the ground now, you may not be able to water it enough. Whatever you decide, if you need a hand lifting it, let me know. It might need supporting too, as in staking. 🌴

  8. I've bagzied the chair on the left at the head of the table for my 50th birthday BBQ son! (if we manage to get a sitter for mums pesky terrier puppy!) lol

  9. Just got to the bit about the Palm trees. Personally I reckon they are best left where they are.
Depending on how long they've been positioned there I assume they will have rooted into the gravel by now, does the barrel move ? maybe build a slightly larger circular stone wall around them, pull off the wood and metal bands and then fill with manure and earth, the circular wall will be at sitting height with flat stones on top so they become a beautiful feature for the terrace.
They are rather exotic and certainly wouldn't grow here in North Haute-Vienne, they need to be cherished.
However you could dig them up, load them somehow onto a trailer and haul the poor things off somewhere else, but surely that's an awful lot of faff !
Pete Farmer was well chuffed about the shout out, Thank you !
Need to carry on watching 🙂

  10. Oh no 😅 don’t say “coquettes” to your hens, “une coquette” is a young flirting girl, flirtatious. Say “cocOttes, or “poulettes”, means a small hen (= poule)

  11. Love the new out door furniture. When your new chicks hatch out you will need a heat lamp to keep them warm indoors.

  12. Palm trees don't have roots like regular trees, but instead have a root ball. You should have no problem replanting it (might have to prop it up with 2by4 brace) Maybe in a bigger pot !
    Great show!
    Music…Way better than boring!

  13. Good job Lisa❤️ Do you see the sunset from your patio? It’s nice to see palm trees while watching the sunset❤️ with a nice tropical drink, cheers❤️❤️❤️

  14. Hi Rob and Lisa…we have the same mole issue as you but we have seen that the soil they bring up is good for your plants so I am just going around taking the top off the hills and digging it in to pots and flower beds…don't know whether it's true but no harm done yet…also just put some garden furniture together and was convinced they had put some wrong pieces in…they hadn't…I had them in the wrong place😂…laterzz 7:58

  15. Now i can see who the brains of the outfit is…… Looks a nice seating area.
Look forward to seeing the place in the sun episode.

  16. Now is the time to transplant it….before the temps get too warm. Dig a 60 cm deep hole about 60. cm wide and soak the roots before putting it into the soil mixed with terreau and some organic fertilizer. It’ll do well with good watering the first summer to help it establish itself.

  17. Some really nice progress on the bathroom. Do you have to have inspections on the plumbing changes? Do you get paid for the "A Place in the Sun" show at all? If you do, you don't have to say how much, I am just curious how that works.

Lisa is such a go-getter, she was all over the assembly for the sofa. The new party area looks so nice and relaxing. I am sure the family will get great joy from it. Another wonderful production. Laterz!

  18. The furniture looks fantastic Rob & Lisa. Hope you get the weather from now on to use it. Glad you had a successful bbq too 👍. Ive been out drinking with ex soldiers so it must have been a great night. As always mate well done on your latest "episode" of your adventure in the charonte. Keep up tge good work 👍🍻👍

  19. Hi Rob. I heard you call the chickens by the French name🎉🎉(I don’t know how to spell it😂). Loved it! You’ve got the accent perfect! Stop calling yourself names! And you are Not boring. Most of us just like to see people just living their lives, going to different shops (yes, we like to see what’s IN the shops and especially brochantes! Furniture is fabulous and Lisa has a beautiful Smile! ❤❤❤

  20. Love your patio area that you're creating ! The new furniture is very nice there..I think re pot the palm tree and place it near your new patio area for a tropical, summertime vibe ! 👍😁

  21. The only way to get rid of moles is traps , you have to find the run between the hills and place the traps , barrel traps are best , but it is a fairly skilled job , I could do it for you , but unfortunately I'm stuck on Brexit Island 😢😢 , probably ask a neighbour if they know someone who can do it for you
