I too was lucky enough to have received wings from several pilots as a kid. Kinda wish I was better at taking care of them, because at the time I didn’t care for the wings. I just wanted to look at all the cool stuff in the cockpit.
I wasn't alive during the "Golden Age" either, but I do remember so many things from flying during my youth that are no more: I have flown on Eastern Airlines, TWA and Pan Am (none of those airlines exist today), I got to go into the cockpit to met the captain while in flight and got my wing pin, I remember meals served on rectangular plastic trays, I remember when people could smoke on flights(!), I remember "double decker" planes that had stairs (is this still a thing?), I remember having to board a commercial plane on the tarmac via stairs that they rolled over to the door, I remember "dressing up" for flights…we never looked "bummy" or wore sweats, etc., my parents always looked sharp! Fond memories indeed!

Maybe I'm crazy but I've always loved airplane food. Lufthansa and me got a lot of beef but their actual beef is pretty good.
Shame we couldn't go back to the days before deregulation made flights miserable.
Ain't no way TWA had a flying maid cafe.
Now flying in a plane is like taking a bus, the people and the service is disgusting!
I hate luxury and these protopigs disgust me.

Air travel used to be luxury

Peerless Coffee in Oakland, California was the primary supplier for Pan American Airways "Clipper" flying boat. They still sell the PanAm blend today and it is very good. Fun fact – in early aviation many destinations lacked airports so a flying boat could be docked at a standard harbor. — But as Max must know given his career arc, Disneyland, at one time, had the best coffee.

I would absolutely have guessed your age early to mid 30s. So is the secret of your youthful looks the hardtack or the garrum?
When I was a kid in the 90's they still had pretty decent inflight meals complete with desert, as well as pre-packaged snacks like peanuts, crackers, tarts and ice cream cups. – Yes, this was economy seating.
An example of what they served back then was roast chicken or ham with carrots peas mashed potatoes and gravy, and a roll. Desert was usually some kind of pastry, pudding, maybe a banana split of you were lucky.
LOL. On my first plane ride at age 8 in 1960, I remember the curtains on the window, the huge leg room, empty middle seats and the wonderful meals. Between TSA, nasty gate agents, crowded planes and all the other insanity that goes with flying – if I can't drive there, I don't go.
I met my French husband at age 32. I HAD NEVER been on a plane, because I couldn't afford it. First trip on a plane with new husband, he started talking about crashes, etc. He didn't know it was my first flight. He had taken the Concord to NYC from Africa for New Years eve.
His joking made me so nervous, that luckily you could smoke on planes then, and I went back to the smoking section and sucked my brains out.
Just telling people not to joke with someone who hasn't been in your shoes! He felt like a microbe afterwards, and never has put me in a situation like that since, without asking me.
Anyone here from AF? When I was a kid Air France used to have 5th freedom rights between Manila and Bangkok on a 747. I don't know how they do it but it seems to me that AF could actually bake breads mid flights because before service the cabin would smell like a bakery in the morning making everyone salivating. The crew would later serve around food tray with warm breads to what seems to me is fresh out of the oven . My mom who was an FA for PAL was herself was baffled about this. Can anyone confirm if the actually bake breads midflight before or it was just reheated breads?
Plasticware were put in use very later on because of security issues, at those times they were normal metallic ones

Many people don't realize that air travel has actually gotten more luxurious and better. Back in those times, only wealthy people could fly. The entirety of planes were 1st class. Most people traveling on planes today would be on trains, cars, and boats in the 50s. If you compare modern 1st class to 50's planes, it's actually better today.
The golden age of air travel was back then not because of the service but because of the company, you would only fly with higher class people and wouldn't have to deal with ill-mannered lowbrow hillbillies like today.

My mother was a stewardess in the late 1950's and early 1960's. She said the ovens were lined with zinc to be fire proof and would turn some food, such as the eggs green.
United Airlines meals today even in business or first class aren’t good enough to give to a stray dog.
I tune into your videos mostly for the history lessons, but I make the recipes too. Could you please post in future videos (in the description) when the History begins. Then viewers could jump right to it. Bitesized Audio Classics (Simon Stanhope) does the same thing.

It wasn't just the "Golden Age of Airlines", it was "The Golden Age". My husband and I know. He's 76 and I'm 70. I was born in 1954.
Idk if they still do this but I got like a Happy Meal when I was a kid in the early 90s. Twice, actually. Good times.
