Hey guys hello and welcome back to my channel in today’s video I am going to be sharing all the details of how we got this Wade scanning done in our dining room Hey guys welcome back I am so excited to finally share with you guys all the details of how we got this wainscanning done in our dining room it’s something we’ve been talking about it and something we’ve been wanting to do for a really long time and I am so glad we

Finally did it and here it is I absolutely love the way it turned out I love every single detail about it and I think we did a really really good job I mean it was a DIY with my husband and I and you guys I think we did an awesome

Job but in today’s video I’m sharing with you guys all the details of how we knocked it out what we used all the tools that we purchased and so stick around if you guys are interested because I’m gonna give you guys all the info all right guys so before I jump

Into this video I’m going to share with you guys a few tips and this is really going to help you and guide you throughout the way to make it a lot more smooth and easier for you to work with the swainscotting now just to make you

Guys all aware this is our first time actually doing wainscotting we are not professionals we’ve done a lot lot of DIYs around the house but we’ve never worked with big tools like a saw so this was the very first time and I think my husband and I did an amazing job so for

Us I wanted something heavy and by heavy meaning like a lot of wasteconding so as you can see here you can see a lot of texture on the walls and the reason is because I’m not going to be placing any type of wall arts or any type of frames

So I wanted the wainscotting to be the actual main piece of art of this room so let me give you guys a little 360 of the entire room so you guys can get a whole look of it I’m gonna go ahead and start with this main wall which is the largest

Wall of the dining room as you can see we have four squares then we have this one here with three squares and then we have a little tiny one here and then we have one there if you come around this way we have some more wainscoting here

And then we even did it above the window you can see it right there and then we got one more Square in that corner right here now when you step into your local Home Depot and I’m saying Home Depot because that’s where we purchased all of our material from you’re gonna come

Across a lot of different styles when it comes to the frames and these strips here but this is the one that we went with this is the outer Square trim and this is the inner Square trim we use two different sizes two different styles just because this is the look that I

Wanted to complete and as far as the spacing in between you can do whatever you want but the most common is three to four inches but I have seen something larger like more wider some people do eight some people do six so it just it depends on your preference and on what

You want so um one tip that I’m going to give you guys is when you step into Home Depot to purchase your material these strips come in a large large Dimension it’s like they’re super big so you don’t want to buy a bunch of those strips and then

Just come home and cut them down because that’s going to be a lot of unused material and you’re gonna spend a lot of money doing that so my my first tip is once you have come down to your Dimensions go ahead and write them down

And then once you head to Home Depot you can actually cut them there yourselves it’s not going to be the angle cut but it’s just going to be a very basic cut and so what you want to do is go ahead and cut it a few inches longer than what

You need that way you have that extra space to work with in case you make mistakes when you come home and you are cutting those angles so for us it was our first time so we did quite a few mistakes on the first few cuttings but

Luckily we had cut our dimensions a few inches larger so we had a lot of space to work with so for example if you guys need a 10 inch on this strip I suggest you guys cutting maybe a 14 inch maybe even a 15 or a 12 if you don’t think

You’re going to be making as much mistakes but the more the better that way you have that room to work with the second tip is finding your Dimensions once you find your Dimensions it’s going to be a piece of cake and it’s going to go really smooth but that was kind of

Challenging for us because because at first we weren’t following any type of strategy um basically what we did to visualize what we wanted is we went ahead and taped it on the wall and that gave us like a complete visualization of what it was going to look like and I think

That’s going to be very helpful so I suggest you get some painters tape go ahead and draw in your squares and you’re going to see what it’s going to look like and you are going to love it or hate it you’re gonna make changes but

It’s going to be with the tape so you’re able to make changes so for us for this entire wall right here we thought we were going to do three squares but when we actually taped it in with the actual tape we thought the squares were too big

There was and you know there was not a lot of wainscoting going on so we went ahead and just added one more Square so we ended up with four and I thought that was like the perfect way to do it so another tip is sketching it dry it out

That’s going to give you another way to visualize of what it’s going to look like and it’s going to help you guide you throughout the way so this is my unprofessional sketch here for those professionals viewing I know this is going to be annoying but this is the

Best that I can do on my sketching so I do apologize for that but this actually gave me a perfect you know like way to look at it it’s like okay this is the way I want it and I can just make changes if I wanted to throughout the

Way so once you go ahead and sketch it out and or if you have taped it you kind of have an idea of what it’s going to look like so there’s an actual strategy to do so you can come with even Dimensions so what you’re gonna do I’m

Gonna go ahead and share with you guys it’s a little bit of math nothing complicated I promise it’s a very simple math it can be a little bit confusing if this is your first time doing this but I promise once you get that number narrowed down and you write it down

You’re gonna be like surprised of how easy it’s gonna go I promise it’s going to be super super simple so what you’re going to do to get the dimensions of your wall and get even spacing um not the dimensions of your wall this is to get the dimensions of the squares

Of your wainscoting so your framing once you get that down it’s going to be very simple so you’re going to want to take the dimension the width of your wall and you’re going to multiply it by 12. you’re then going to take the amount of spacings that you’re going to have in

Between of your squares and you’re going to multiply it by the actual width of your spacing so for example we use these little blocks here but my husband cut out and this is going to also guide you throughout the way if you have your spacings cut out this is going to be

Super easy for you to just guide you throughout the whole way so for us we used a four inch spacing so you know we have one two three four five so you’re going to go ahead and multiply four times five and that’s going to give you

This number and then you are going to take your total width of the wall which is what this number gave you and then you’re going to go ahead and subtract it by 20. which is what this gave you you’re then going to divide that by the

Amount of squares that you want so for us our Dimensions the width of our boxes are 27 and a half and that’s how we came up with the dimension of our boxes they are four inch spacings in between and it’s all even throughout the whole wall you have four inch spacing at the

Beginning of the wall which is right here and then you end up with four inch spacing throughout and then four inch spacing at the end of the wall so that’s how you do that now to get the length basically what we did is we also used a

Spacer and we went with three and a half so you put your three and a half here you put your three and a half at the very top and then you mark it and then you measure that so for us it measured 60 inches so this is what it looks like

Our box is 27 and a half by UH 60 inches where is the 60 right here sorry so 60 inches by um 27 and a half and that’s how we found our Dimensions you’re going to do the exact same thing with the bottom you’re just going to repeat the same steps that

I just showed you and that you guys I promise it’s going to be very simple and that’s going to be your number one guide to find your dimensions and for our spacing for the inner Square we use the one inch it’s only a one inch separated so you’re once you have your outer

Square you’re going to go ahead and take a one inch spacer and then you mark it and that’s going to give you the dimensions of your inner box and it’s super easy all these are the ones that you use the log sticks to stir the paint

Um we didn’t even know we had no idea it was a one inch but we had a few in the garage and we were about to do some cuttings with the blocks and my husband said let me go ahead and just measure these little sticks that we have and it

Wasn’t a one inch so that’s exactly what we used it because we had quite a few it actually worked out perfectly fine for us so these are one Inch spacers um that’s gonna space the outer box with the inner box so that’s what we used and

As far as our caulking this is what we used and we used the white one and um you can also use this to go ahead and cover all the nails that you’re going to be adding to your trim um there’s a lot of videos out there

That show you how to just do it with your finger I did it with the finger it was really simple really easy I was scared to because it’s my first time doing something like this but once you do it the first time you’re gonna be like a professional at the end of the

Project you can also use this to cover your nails it gives you a more like more full coverage because we did at first started covering the nails with the caulking but once we painted the first Square we noticed that you can still see that there was a nail there so my

Husband was not liking that so he went back to Home Depot purchased this and if you do add a more chunkier amount you can always go back and just sand it down very lightly and then just paint over it so my other recommendation is when you purchase your trim I suggest you guys

Purchase it that’s already primed that’s why that way when you go ahead and install it and it you can jump right into the painting and then you’re going to be completely done but unfortunately the inner trim did not come in an option so we had no option

But to prime it ourselves but once we did that it went really smooth all we had to do is just paint and I used the same color that I had in my dining room a lot of people like to do their trim white or they like to do different

Styles different colors but I went ahead and painted it the same existing color that I already had that was just the style that I wanted and I absolutely love the way it turned out another good tip is to remember to write your dimensions on the back of your material

Because it can be very easy for you to lose track since you’re going to have so many different cuttings this way it eases everything and it makes it a lot more easier We encountered a little issue right here with this connection here this is actually an internet and phone connection but that is not going to be used here in the dining room so we are deciding to just go ahead and remove the plug and then we’re going to go ahead

And cap that with a drywall so we’re going to go ahead and skip this Square for now and we’re just gonna move on to the other ones um it’s sat like right on the corner of like where the 45 degree angle is and we try to wrap our head around to see what

We can do but it was just it’s too much I think the easiest way is to just go ahead and cap it um with drywall and then just seal it and paint it and then just kind of go over that so we’re skipping that one for

Now we’re moving on with the next ones Foreign So here as you can see we’ve already started with the inner squares which is this little skinnier trim um and we are just using the skinny ones they’re also from the Home Depot and I’ll go ahead and label them out for you guys and what we are doing here we are

Just leaving a one inch Gap from the original frame to the inner side so these little rulers came in handy these are from the Home Depot from the paint section and so what we’re doing which is adding these here to give us the one inch space that we want and then that’s

How we’re doing the inner box so we’ve already done the top ones as you can see here and then we did some of the bottoms and it’s coming out very very well foreign Hey guys welcome back to day three of working in the dining room and I’m hoping it’s the last day we don’t need much we just need this little corner right here so we’re gonna go back to Home Depot because we kind of ran out of wood pieces so we’re gonna go pick up

Some more material and then try to finish that today it’s been taking quite a while just because as you guys all know I have a family so that means I have a household to take care of I have cooking to do picking up the home Etc so

You guys know the whole drill but I’m hoping today is the day that we finish we’ll do the caulking and then we’ll go ahead and try to paint it sometime this week so let’s go to Home Depot real quick Thank you Thank you foreign Video with my new drapes that are coming in I ordered some from Ikea and then I have some new chairs I’ll finally have all the set of six SO waiting for that as soon as I have those two items and some more table Decor I’ll go ahead and

Update another video with the complete look of this room and so that is a wrap that’s it for today’s video let me know what you guys think I would love to know in the comments down below and thank you guys so much for watching don’t forget

  1. Great job Norma and hubby! 👏 You guys are adorable! Norma, what made you want to double frame each square? Looks gorgeous in your space! I’m doing my living room wall, but it will be single squares. I’m so glad you showed us your exact (outer wider) trim bc I didn’t know what type to use. Do you think that will look good even making single squares vs double like yours? Awesome video! 💗

  2. This is exactly the video i needed!! It's so hard to find a nested wainscoting on a textured wall. Great job and the room looks amazing!!

  3. Love the wainscoting in your dining room. Do you mind sharing what color is the paint that you used in the dining room?

  4. Very well done! I’m about to do this myself. How did you determine what size the box was to be for the small wall?

  5. Waw thank you Norma, your video is very useful and informative.
Just a quick question any specific type of paint to coat the whole wall surface?
What an amazing DIY you did there 🙂
    Love it

  6. Hello love the video very helpful, in regards to the trim/molding in the middle of the wall which one did you use? Do you mind sharing the size of it?

  7. Awesome job and loadsa great tips….just ordered my nail gun….so will be coming back here to revise all your lessons! thanks so much! 😁

  8. I love how you thoroughly give details on your work (The process) & how you explain the products that are used on your projects.
    New subscriber!

  9. Question. I’m going to do this to my dining room. What size nails did you use and does it matter if you hit a stud or just the nail in dry wall enough to keep it on wall. ?

  10. Love how this turned out! Your video really inspired me to do this to my dining room! Just wondering, what was the name of chair rail moulding use? (The long straight one that is separating the upper and lower portions in the middle) Thanks! 🙂

  11. Pin nailer will save you from patching the holes. The paint covers them cuz they are so small just fyi

  12. This video has been extremely helpful!! Omg . Thank you! I am going to be trying this with my husband. We need to remodel on a budget and we’re both newbies to this lol

  13. Math is not my forte…so I’m probably missing something here. If you multiply the 4 boxes (27.5×4) you get 110. Space between each box is 4 inches which you multiply by 5 and that equals 20. If you add 110 plus 20 that equals 130. Your wall width is 131 1/8. What about the remaining 1 1/8 inch?

  14. Beautiful and very inspiring! At what height from the floor did you place the chair rail? Also can you share what chair rail you used?

  15. You guys can make it eaiser for ya self and use a wainscoting calculator. It does the whole layout and measurements.

  16. My issue is the cutting of the angles or miters. How do you measure? Any video on that will help

  17. Looks beautiful, great job, 👏 👏👏👏and congratulations I’m just in the process of doing my Daughters living room, 😊
