Yikes. I would have had my hand slapped had I been swishing food around the plate like a few people at the table. Didn't we learn this back when we were 5 or 6 years old. I know I did.
I feel like Americans who think that this style of eating is incorrect are ethnocentric. Just because people do one thing differently in another country doesn't mean it's wrong.
80% comments here criticising these students. Shame on you. They are learning, ofc they will make mistakes. You call yourself refined? Then don't act like that, a refined person will be more understanding on what's going on in there and make more constructive comments
Maybe they should take a cue from Princess Diaries Movie they should tie their upper torsos to the chair so they use their hands to being the forks up not hunch over the food like cave men.
I attended a wedding and was eating Continental style at a round table. Everyone else was eating American style, and the fork in my left hand almost clashed with the fork in my girlfriend's right hand. So I immediately switched the fork to my right hand. It felt like everyone was looking at me as if I was wrong. We broke up less than a month later.
There are videos to learn other cultures style of eating and etiquette, if someone is here they are looking to learn European continental style. Save your sarcasm and move along to the one you prefer or wish to learn. Yes, obviously these are students learning and yes, they have a ways to go still.
i could maybe do the tines downward if i stabbed the morsel and remembered to try [though i do naturally do tines down in the left hand when cutting the food, so i guess i'm halfway there]. but it'd be very hard if it involved pushing food onto the tines and they were pointed down…i could imagine downward points might ever so slightly less threatening and maybe they have an unflattering mental image of a farmer scooping up hay when they see tines up 🙂 i think there must be more facets though…i can't quite put my finger on why, but for some reason seeing the guy comedian in the "supersizers" series eating tines down is more disturbing than seeing these people eating tines down..oh! maybe the ones in this video still use the "pencil" grasp but the supersizers guy seems to hold his fork like a dagger (except if the pointy end left the thumb side..so..i guess not like a dagger 🙂 )
I can understtand there is different ethics in dining however its baffles me to eat rice with fork.. I've seen in restaurant they serve chicken soup and no spoon on table but only fork and knife..
when I resided in Europe I thought that upside-down balancing act with the fork was stupid and pretentious. now, I find myself using it a lot here in the states🤔😆
This is NOT how Europeans eat! Only the Brits and French eat this way. I've lived in Germany and Eastern Europe and no one does this. People use the rounded bit to scoop the food, for example mash. They don't put the mash on the other side of the fork, as it naturally falls off due to the curve. If you're eating a steak with mash you cut the steak (as the people in the video) and then you turn around the fork to scoop the mash (unlike the people in the video).
The so-called Continental style looks like an affectation when Americans use it. The American style predates the Continental style and looks more natural for Americans to use. American style is perfectly good manners, so don't put on airs, trying to proclaim to the world that you are a sophisticated world traveler, or have studied or worked abroad.
Alhumdulillah we are Muslims and we prefer to eat with right hand means fork should be in our right hand instead of left because our beloved prophet Muhammad says that naver eat with your left hand No one is above and well mannered decent than holy prophet s.w.w
If the occasion is very important and judgements will be made about how you act and look, then best not to eat at all, or eat very little as to keep it short. Eat before or after the event in whatever way you choose.
Question: Is it acceptable to eat mashed potatoes with the fork tines pointed up, if I were not cutting a piece of meat at that moment? For instance if I had put my utensils down to take a break from eating and wanted a bit of potatoes when I resumed, OR if I finished my meat and I still have potatoes left. It seems awkward to push potatoes onto the back side of my fork, and I would think the goal of fine dining etiquette would be to not look awkward. Same question about peas or veggies, if I am not cutting a piece of meat. Thanks!
Another question: If I am dining in America, is it acceptable to use the Continental dining etiquette? What if some guests were using Continental, is it o.k. to use American? Should you ask all guests at the beginning of dinner what etiquette will be used? 🙂 (i'm kidding about this last question)
Couldn’t be more gay, just eat like a human, not a robot . Upside down fork while food falls off as the fork was not designed that way, I wish I was super rich so I go in there and eat like I want , a human way, and tell everyone to F off and buy the restaurant and then close it down
The video title is inaccurate and imprecise. Everybody anywhere in the world using a fork during the cutting of food does it the same way, with the tines pointed down. In Europe, you never switch hands but continue eating with your fork in your left hand. The difference in America is that formal table etiquette requires you to cut off a piece and then switch the fork into your right hand to pick it up. However, as a European, when I first came to the States, I was amused to see so many people cut up a piece of meat into small pieces, put away the knife, and then continue with the fork in their right hand. This is what parents usually do for small children to make them eat meat more easily.
I'm American, but I have been practicing the European way for a few years now. I've gotten pretty good at it, but it still feels a bit alien to me. I do think that the European style is better, more efficient, etc. My heart is with America, but for eating purposes, I think I will stick with the European way of using a fork and knife.

I think whatever works without troubling others or being messy should be fine.
I hold the folk in the right and knife in the left therefore the food goes into your mouth with the strong hand the right hand,
What am i doing here??!?
How do ppl not know how to use a knife and fork!?
BЯUH
My father would be annoyed to see them benching their head to the plate. Keep sitting straight all the time and bring your fork to your mouth.
The tip goes up not down, wtf people pretending knowing etiquette

Yeah. Proper way 👍
But fork to mouth. Not mouth to fork.😠

That much food on a single plate wouldn’t happen in the European continent.

The fork is brought up to your mouth, they look like they are bobbing for apples.
Oh, boy, they're dive-bombing their plates. We learned not to do that by age six. OMG
I’m American but I’ve adopted Continental style and i find it SO much faster and easier to eat!

1% mealing
Wtf😂
Their next lesson was: proper missionary position etiquette. Smfh most depressing/boring ass people you’ll ever meet in your life.
That is too much food.

That's why I always prefer to eat in private and order snacks esay to pick every time with someone 😜
In Europe they eat a lot of horses and it requires a lot of strength. That's why they have to keep the knife in their dominant hand.

terrible the tongue that catches the morsel
The head bending over the plate is not beautiful.
I eat like Matt Stonie

I have never seen food eaten with the curvy side of the fork. Am I doing it wrong all my life or what !
How is "non -Continental" style or tour way of doing it, where you live, please ? Thanks you a lot. Have a nice date.

I think Indian food is easier to eat with God given hands and so we use our hands😊.No technique or special skills required. We can use hands as we like

This is actually helpful seeing it done. I've always wondered do I use my knife to scoop the food onto the back of the fork or?

Ugh, barbaric and wrong. Never eat while holding a knife.
In what universe should a tool be used upside down? The spoon???
NOBODY CARES
Why can't we put the food on the fork and not at the back of it. Makes no sense
