During this time of year – it seems that the weather is playing with us, with rare glimpses of sunshine and any real break from the extremes of winter in Central France, it can be easy to forget to seek the beauty of the season and to be out discovering the ever changing natural beauty and taking time to discover new old things – a favourite pastime and really is something else and provides an instant rejuvenation during these long winter months.
We all needed a Road to chase away the Winter Blues . A Road Trip in France, can just be a day trip – Pack a Picque Nique, a bottle of French wine, include a selection of artisan Cheeses, fresh baguettes, don’t forget the charcuterie, seasonal fruit and a sweet treat from your favourite Boulangerie. Essentials on any trip, include a sketch book, cameras, and a sense of adventure, and of course no time limits. Don’t forget to take water, an extra coat and be sure you have planned your trip a little for such things as a full tank of petrol and some food supplies, in case you don’t happen upon a place to eat. An integral part of living in rural France, is the slower pace and adherence to local traditions. A 2 hour lunch is a thing and it is best to be prepared to fully enjoy your adventure.
Even if you don’t have wheels, a walk into your local village, stop off at the local Bar or Tabac, talk to some locals, enjoy a quite wine or three , then take a stroll in the countryside. Parfait! A mini Day trip in effect.
But there is nothing like a road trip , at a relaxed pace, with no fixed agenda or expectations, France ticks all the boxes, and your casual road trip, will be fun, full of new discoveries, amazing local experiences, beautiful people and culture.
Today, we set out to spend time in a medieval village not too far from us – Montmorillon, This small city is filled with an alluring charm of yesteryear , Art and Authentic Medieval History. The City of Writers, Secondhand Booksellers, painters, designers and Artisans who stay true to the ways of old even today and really should be included on your “Must Visit” List.
Montmorillon is known as the City of Writing and Book Professions, and is also a town of Artisans who open their workshops to all, who pass by and happily share their professions. A stroll through this city is such an epic experience and you will find yourself returning to visit again.
One of our favourite things to do after a stroll through the Medieval quarter is to find a spot along the Banks of the Gartempe, the river that separates the city in two. A view of the city and L’ Eglises Notre-Dame ensures you will want to cross the ancient medieval bridge with superb viewing points to contemplate the beauty, history and timelessness.
An interactive fun Gourmet experience to finish your visit on a high note.-another must do here Macaroons have been a specialty of Montmorillon since the 18th century Rannou-Métivier House perpetuates this tradition and located in the lower town, is the Macaroon Museum
Of course, no matter where you travel in Beautiful France, you will happen upon exquisite discoveries and our journey home did not disappoint, when we remembered we were going to pass by the most captivating Chateau de Bourg-Archambault. Located in Municipality: 86035. Vienne [86] – Poitiers – Poitou Charentes – Nouvelle-Aquitaine
We will never forget our first glimpse as we came around a bend on a quite country road, arriving at Bourg-Archambault (Vienne) Breathtaking Elegance, and mystery of such a magical Historical Castle, makes it impossible not to take time to stop and contemplate not only the beauty, and incredible history , but the immense commitment of the family who own this sacred monument.
No matter when we pass by, we always stop to imagine just how beautiful it would be, to walk through the ancient halls, to feel the many ancestors who have lived there. Time spent gazing at the beauty of the large moat and watching the fish and bird life and then to imagine what is beyond those gates. So yes if you happen to see an Australian Family on the side of the road, having a picnic, inhaling the beauty, It is us! Imagine if in 500 years, this Castle is still standing for people to enjoy as much as we do. It is our hope that this will be.
