During the war, Thiepval was situated on the front line and witnessed intense fighting between German and Allied forces. The Battle of Thiepval Ridge, which took place from September to October 1916, was one of the bloodiest battles of the war. The British and French armies launched a joint offensive to capture the Thiepval ridge, which was heavily fortified by the Germans. After several weeks of fierce fighting, the Allies eventually succeeded in capturing the ridge, but at a great cost of lives.
