I think the cubes represent society's expectations who can and cannot find love. They see each other as they really are two people in love, going to dinner dates, karaoke maybe even marrying, whereas when the cube is near they appear scarred, unkempt and have to run and hide from the hate their love brings. In the end they fight against the cubes but like some societies do the two are stripped of who they are (the clothes as a visual) and hidden away maybe within the cube so society can return to the status quo. But love wins all because they didn't give up they fought for their love.
That is my thoughts anyway.

Apparently IU is deaf and Tae is blind in one eye, both have been that way from birth. The cube is getting rid of people with "defects" and the camera is then imagining a world where they can be happy because they're "normal". Heartbreaking

It's both heart-rending and uplifting. I am so conflicted right now. I'm happy for them because they were able to have those happy moments, but also torn apart by the fact those moments couldn't last.

I may be totally reaching but I think the box represents repressing and trying to put “love in a box” rather than letting it be what it is. When they lose their clothes they lose identity (bride and groom)

I see it as social commentary. Youth in South Korea aren’t getting married and having babies like in the pass because of economic pressures. They are too battered and bruised by untenable social pressures (the cube). Notice they look through old camcorder surrounded by 1990’s artifacts when youth married. Her words, “Gone astray” is how the older generation describes the youth of this generation. It’s not that they don’t want love, it’s just not possible to have it in the old way. They’re sad about what they can’t have, but will love anyway with the old fashion marriage.

For me it represents society that doesn't accept relations/people who don't fit the boxes there are. Wether it's about sexuality or beauty standards, expectations they have of you ( idols, parents etc ) or whatever they ( society) will try to separate, exclude you. Deep meaning, I love it and the acting is on oscar level and the vocal is angelic

My thoughts about the lyrics/MV, obviously it's a romantic story but I think the message can also be IU reminding herself all the love around her giving her strength while all the tragic happened around her all these years i.e. family financial struggles in her young age, lost 3 friends who ended their own lifes & all the anits/pressure against her as a solo female artist, etc.. No matter what hardship she/we face, LOVE WINS ALL.
