REAL VS. REPLICA FRENCH CHATEAU Compare authentic French Castles to an American mansion reproduction.
Yes, these are real French castles. They are made of brick and sheathed with limestone, stucco, and marble. They were built for kings and then copied in their own land.
They were exquisitely detailed inside and out. Craftspeople carved the stone details, built all the windows and doors from scratch, and the window panes were very expensive.
They went from a defensive posture to a more friendly disposition after the Renaissance.
The French architects always found their Italian counterparts to be superior in the arts until they established their own national style characterized by steep roofs, multiple chimneys, larger windows, and a profusion of mannerist detail inside and out.
There were no building codes, no height limitations, no inspectors. They designed and built as they saw fit per their properties and budget.
There were no furnaces nor electricity. Fire heated these chateau and cooked food. There were no luxury kitchens inside with appliances and granite countertops.
Servants were available in the larger chateau to answer to every whim.
Torchieres and candles lit them at night.
From medieval times through the Renaissance the kitchens were kept in the basement, and toilets and bidets were not known.
French interiors are lavish. The stucco work, flooring, and minute detailing on the walls and ceilings were all done by hand. They remain total works of art.
They were built on extensive estates, the royal ones taking up hundreds of thousands of acres.
The grounds were amazing with fountains, tempiettos, statues, ponds, and meticulously kept gardens.
And the nobility copied the king. The upper class copied the nobility. And the general style was emulated by those with more modest budgets.
Which takes us to 200 plus years later when kings no longer can loot their national treasures, land barons are extinct, yet those who visit the original creations desire something of the spirit of the French romance.
Budgets now are more limited, construction costs for labor and materials very high, land costs are equally difficult to rationalize for a large estate, etc.
But architects and craftspeople are becoming less and less skilled and available to be able to produce a facsimile of the original splendor.
I humbly present one residence I’ve designed in the past, inspired by historical French motifs.
Height limits by code allowed only a 46 foot height.
It was built of concrete block and wood framing, some key stone pieces hand carved in Mexico, and interior moldings all synthetic or wood.
Yes, it is fake.
Only a historic original residence built in France is a true French Chateau.

His bikes cruising around what is a pretty impressive driveway leading up to a pretty impressive house Ron how are you well Jack I’m great you know and if it wasn’t for this Spanish moss back here I might uh might not realize that I’m not in France but I’m actually in

Florida just look at this house right here this is done in the French Renaissance style with this huge closed in porch these triple arches up here these giant columns this house is brand new it took about 2 and 1/2 years to build and 55 tons of stone went into

This house a lot of it hand carved like this that you see over the doorway right here but that’s just the beginning step into the foer here and I want you toh take a look at some more of it this plaum Arch right here all hand carved

From Stone qued in Mexico above that a balcony and way up on the ceiling that vated ceiling with the Skylight above it if you come down this side over here another PLA and Arch looking into the dining room show you that in a minute and then this Grand stairway that

Finishes off in this nle post again handcarved from Stone I want to walk out now into what uh they refer to as the central quor couple of things really caught my eye here again look up see the vated ceiling with the faux finish up there kind of cloudlike and then this

Series of repeated open transoms behind me here uh that goes literally from one end of the house to another that’s over 100 ft we’re moving now into the master bathroom here’s a freestanding canopy tub look at the number of jets on the back of this tub can you imagine

Yourself just relaxing in that and believe it or not for the second time in 2 days I’ve seen a shower it’s actually a walk through a door on both sides her her side over here and his side over here actually the whole bathroom is sort

Of divided into a his and hers room on this side we’ve got her vanity his vanity in his dressing room over here her vanity her dressing table and back in here her dressing room now come over with me here we’re going to cross back through this Corridor into the master

Bedroom beautiful Granite surrounding the fireplace right here gorgeous views of the lake out here and right here a little spiral staircase that goes up to a retreat only available and known to the owners of the house okay we’re walking now into the library and if you look up here you’ll see this great

Gallery that that covers three walls in here now and then paneling the star of the floor goes all the way up you see this Arch pattern repeated in here this library was actually patterned after a library in the builtmore Mansion down in Asheville North Carolina right I’m going

To start now back out into this Central Corridor and we’re going to continue down this way into the living room and and once again I’ve just got to direct your attention up because the ceiling in here is 35 ft high it’s vaated a coffered ceiling and notice that series

Of five arched Windows right there one of the things that really caught my attention in here was this fireplace a foot excuse me a story and a half High all handcarved Stone it’s actually a past through or a two-sided fireplace you can see it from the family room over

There I’ll show you that in just a second back into the quarter and I want to take you down here and show you the dining room this is done in a very formal French style and this is not a rectal linear room this room is in the

Shape of an oval everything is curves here once again a 35 ft high ceiling those moldings up there are built up stacked out of many pieces of molding these chandeliers actually lower down to change them or to clean them okay for the last time back in the central

Corridor here we’re going into the kitchen where I want to show you probably one of the largest Islands I’ve seen by level above here sort of a floating saet with which brings the lights down closer to the work surface over on this side an office from which

To run a home like this great seating area right here high enough for to use to use bar stools now this is actually a kitchen for two Cooks over on this side is the baking area got granite countertops here dual ovens and all the refrigeration in this kitchen as well is

Hidden behind panels like this the other side of the kitchen over here is features a quartz range right here and then a very large food preparation area all right let’s move down this way into the family room here are some great examples in here of some beautiful custommade woodwork all in a traditional

Style you can see it down here in the entertainment center and the bookshelves I’m going to pass out here into the patio and the pool area right now and as I do so I want you to look down here at this beautiful view of Lake Butler because the back of the house is

Situated to really take advantage of that and we’re going to move over here to meet the people who created and enjoy this place Mrs is John Henry the architect hi John how are you good to see you and this is Cindy and Ben pots the owners and their mom Cindy’s Mom

Right yes uh quick question for you John what uh would you would you say you were trying to accomplish here well this is truly a French romance and a rep represents a return to tradition do you feel it’s a tradition oh yes feel romantic here yes oh yes well that’s it Jack [Applause]

  1. Toy size French Chateaux. Wouldn't it be better to design and build these size buildings based on similarly sized French mansions from the 16th – 18th centuries? They're smaller and far simpler. They fit their size. Trying to cram in all the details of Vaux or Chenonceau on buildings a quarter their size… well. It's kinda the worst of the petit bourgeoisie.
