Hello I’m Jam Masa an international social etiquette consultant author etiquette books etiquette the Le you need to know and afternoon to Etiquette if you would like to get my books you can do so directly on my website they’re available for worldwide shipment so by
What you see here in front of me you can already guess that today’s video is going to be about dining etiquette we shot our first dining etiquette video here in Baku in Four Seasons Hotel and it was the most popular video of my channel it has gathered over 6 million
Views so far and I see that a lot of people still use that video and watch and rewatch it uh especially before getting ready for an important dinner or lunch date so here it is the second version the upgraded version of the dining etiquette that we’re shooting
Here in Rose Bar Baku very beautiful restaurant that has a beautiful selection of seafood and different kind of fusion dishes if you’re ever in ble make sure to check it out so this restaurant by format is an upscale restaurant it’s not very formal dining place like for example you would expect
To get in Michelin star restaurant or perhaps if you’re attending a Gala dinner then everything is super formal there and you’re going to have a different selection of Cutlery there here the restaurant is very modern we shake but still but still very upscale so you will see H quite a variety of
Cutlery that they have offered us today for this Sho so before getting started I want to knowe that since this is an upscale restaurant they also provide with very beautiful white material tablecloth uh for this particular shoot usually you’ll find in this restaurant some plac mats as well this is
Permissible especially in modern day as an etiquette evolves there’s not a lot of restaurants that have table cloth most of them would have plac mats um or maybe a table runner but a very upscale restaurant will have a white tablecloth in stock just in case that there’s a
Private dinner happening or you know the place has to be set in a very formal uh setting so here I have the white um tablecloth I have a white napkin that doesn’t have a lot of things happening a lot of embroidery on it it’s very simple which is the statement for upscale
Restaurants you might get a napkin ring or you might not the most upscale and formal ones will not carry a napkin ring it’s placed here in the middle on on the plate so this is what we have right now right to my um so not right but to my
Left hand I have a little um bread plate uh it is supposed to be smaller than the one that I’m being served but it is okay for this particular setup next let’s look at our Cutlery so we have the main course plate in the middle in the center
To my left hand side I have the forks place the forks always go on the left hand side so we have a selection of Three Forks work they are of a similar style but if one of them is smaller than the rest usually they’re if in a very
Formal restaurant you would have a fork that is particular for fish but here we’re using a main course fork and a main course so two main Fork of course forks for fish and meat um then we have here a small salad fork which you can tell is a lot smaller than the main
Course one and they are placed in order of the use so this is how the cutlery is place it’s place from outwards inwards in the order that I’m going to be using it so then to my right hand side I have all the knives spoon and the only fork
That goes to the right hand side is actually a an oyster Fork so interestingly it’s the only fork that will be placed in the right hand side and the reason is because I’ll be holding it in my right hand uh so that’s why it’s in the right hand and I’m I’m
Going to be only using that fork I’m not going going to use any knife with it that’s why it’s on the right hand then we have in the order um of of the pairing with the cutlery on the left hand side we have the knife or salad
Then I’m going to have a soup because I have a spoon here so I know that after salad I’m going to expect to have a soup So based on the shape of the soup of this uh soup spoon I can tell that I’m going to have some kind of a broth uh
With maybe some vegetables or chunks of meat in it so it’s not going to be a cream soup I have shown how to eat a cream soup in a previous video for dining etiquette you can check it out next we have a fish knife so you can tell by its particular peculiar shape
It’s very different from your regular main course knife that this is for the fish you will never mistake it with anything else a lot of the restaurants nowadays actually don’t carry a fish knife most of them just serve you with a regular main course knife to eat the
Fish which is okay because as eate evolves and and lifestyle really changes and it becomes more modernized and more simplified a lot of the cutleries are reduced from the restaurant so you will find yourself in even the most upscale restaurant where they only serve the
Same kind of fork and knife for fish and mangor the reason I’m showing you this is so that when you see one you know what it’s used for and of course we have the main course knife which is the largest one and the knife KN are always placed with their blades facing inwards
So that all the blades of the knives are looking inwards and uh as you can tell I have this very uh nice symmetrical setup so the way that you will know what is yours and what is not yours so you don’t confuse it with a neighbor is a really good acronym called
BMW it stands for the breath plate main course and W stands for water so anything that is drink related is always on your right hand side just think about it most of us are right hand SED so we’re going to reach out to take a drink
From the right hand that’s why all the drinks are placed on the right hand side never confuse your drink glass with that of your neighbor if you know this rule you’ll never do that now the final element of today’s setup are the glasses of course you will not see these many
Glasses on the table all at once but I asked the restaurant to put all their glasses on the table so I can show you the difference and what each glass is meant for so these two are meant for water one is stemless one and another comes with a really thick and short stem
So both are used to serve water again depends on the restaurant on the design of the restaurant on the whole Ambiance you might get a stemless glass which is often the case in a lot of less formal restaurants and this one would be something that you can find in the more
Upscale restaurant it’s very different from the rest of the wine and champagne glasses by the design of it these glasses are usually placed at the closest reach to you so they’ll be closer to the plate and because you will continuously reach out to them throughout the whole meal next we have
Uh the wine glasses we have the white wine glass which has a thinner bowl and it’s more like a tulip actually not the one like the champagne one but it reminds me more of an open tulip rather than if we were to compare it say with a
Red wine glass which has a really big bow as you can tell and of course you can tell the difference by their size so if their glass is one is bigger than the other then one is for red one and the other is for white one and usually you
Will get the most common glass that you’ll see in a lot of venues and restaurants for New Year for holidays the one recognizable one the champagne flute and the champagne glass it actually became popularized later on through the movies uh we’ll see another champagne glass very soon which is more
Traditional more old school version of a glass for champagne so the flute of course is recognizable but it’s very unique shape has a very thin Bowl so that the bubbles of the champagne are kept intact uh because that was makes champagne so special uh and so that it
Keeps the drink chilled for the longer time then we have the coupe which is the very beautiful glass my personal favorite uh I find it such a delicate piece of Art and it’s just I think the most beautiful glass of them all you would traditionally be served champagne
In a coupe but again since things are changing and things are modernizing a lot of the restaurants won’t even carry this kind of a glass nowadays you’ll find a lot of cocktails being served in this um like your Martini or perhaps U shakerato so a lot of different drinks
Are now served in this scoup and uh champagne is now mostly served in this flute glass usually you would get for example a selection of three glasses you’ll have a water goblet a white and a red wine glass or a white wine glass and a champagne by the glasses that you have
Set at the table you will know what kind of drinks you’re going to be served if you have watched my first dining etiquette video you’ll probably notice that something is missing here at the table and if you haven’t watched it go back to the first video and make sure to
Watch it because this video will contain slightly different information and is that there is no uh butter knife on the bread plate usually as things get more simplified a lot of the restaurants are getting rid of a lot of different versions of Cutlery because the maintenance takes um takes time it takes
Money to invest into different pieces of Cutlery as well as different kinds of glasses so a lot of even the most upscale restaurants will really narrow down their Cutlery menu so to speak and their glass menu to the basics the ones that can interchangeably be used for
Different kind of meals Cutlery as well as glasses for different kind of drinks so you will see that you know I am preaching and teaching you this is a fish fork and this is a fish knife and you find yourself in a restaurant where they don’t serve a fish fork and fish
Knife and you might ask what do I do you proceed using the main course fork and knife to eat the fish all you need to do is understand the technique of eating a fish what you do if you know if there’s a piece of bone in it if there is um how
Do you cut a fish how do you eat a fish so you understand the basics of how to eat it but again if you’re not served the right Cutlery as you were instructed by me and by etiquette schools you will just eat with whatever is given to you
Again you’ll find yourself at someone’s home they don’t have this selection of glasses they’ll serve you say a red wine in a white wine glass and that’s okay you proceed drinking it from a white wine glass by the way if you want to learn more in details about how to
Properly hold different kind of glasses what kind of wine to get how to pair wines how to select Wines please let me know down in the comment section below and I’ll do a separate video particularly for that for the purposes of this video after having shown you
Different kind of glasses I’m going to clear away the glasses that I’m not going to be using I’ll only be drinking water so I’ll have the water goblet here and I’ll clear away the cuty in particular the oyster Fork that I’m not going to be eating today the rest will
Remain at the table and we’ll start with our dinner before we start with a meal we always always unfold the napkin and when we unfold the napkin we have to do it always below the table never above I’ve seen some people open their napkin here somewhere here it should not be
Visible you should do whatever you’re doing underneath the table so you unfold the napkin if the napkin is small you can unfold it completely and lay it flat on your lap if it’s a large napkin large dinner napkin usually for lunch you’ll get a smaller one for dinner you’ll get
A larger one if it’s a large napkin you just fold it in half you can do it in a triangular shape or you can do it in a rectangular shape my personal preference is a rectangular shape with a slit facing towards you so that when you need
To wipe or dab your fingers or whatever you can do it discreetly open the rectangular fold wipe it inside the napkin and then close it off so from the above your napkin looks pristine and clean you will never place your napkin if you’re an adult around your uh neck
Or put it inside tuck it inside your shirt this is something I often see done by a lot of men especially at breakfast you know at in the hotels when they’re going for a business meeting they came for breakfast they tuck this inside their shirt it doesn’t look good it
Doesn’t make you look like you have good manners that you can Master whatever you have for breakfast without having to protect your shirt your manners should be so good so on point that there is no need for you to use this napkin as a cover up for your shirt it looks like a
Little baby bib so do not be using it the only time when it’s permissible to tie your napkin around your color like this is if you were say at a lobster restaurant or uh you have to you know crack the shell and do it all by yourself that’s the only place where
They’re going to serve you with a special bip that you cover your uh shirt with and you proceed with really doing all this uh intricate uh cutting of the of the shell and getting the lobster out of it the rest of the cases never place
It on your shirt what you do with your napkin if you go for a say a bathroom break or you take a break maybe if you’re smoking you go outside for a smoke but you are coming back to the table you always place your napkin on a
Chair so that the waiter knows that you haven’t gone for for good that you’ll be back so it’s almost like save this chair for me I will be back it’s occupied in some restaurants in Switzerland they actually serve you with a hook so you can place your napkin on a hook when
You’re going um for a break maybe outside or if you’re going to use the the bathroom what you also have to keep in mind is that napkin is not a tissue so it’s made of a material cloth you have to treat it like that so you would
Not use it to say wipe your hands like this create this little bowl of of that I see people do with tissues you will never do that with napkin I don’t recommend to do it with tissues either the reason you need a napkin is that it protects the lap so it protects your
Pants or your dress whatever you’re wearing your skirt but also to wipe wipe your fingertips if you ate something with your fingers dab your mouth if you’re about to take a sip of a drink and you have some oil or some you know residue after whatever you ate on your
Mouth so that is what you need to do to dab it never clean or wipe it that’s not what the napkin is used for H when you are done with the meal and you are leaving the table you need to place the napkin gently fold it like that you can
Leave it on the left side of your table left is usually where we reserve everything that is dirty that is soiled that’s not going to be used anymore we left it we leave it on the left hand side I’ve seen some people where they
Would just do it turn it into a bowl and leave it on a plate like that you never do it even if your plate is super clean you never place a soil napkin on a plate you can leave it on the left hand side of your table do not create a little
Ball like that but also do not gently and accurately very precisely fold it back to its original shape and place it on the left hand side because then it confuses the waiter as if your napkin were to be clean they have to know that
This was a used napkin so leave it in a rather improper shape for example like this a little bit like that on the left hand side so the waiter can know this is not a clean one and it has to be cleared away one of the most common asked
Questions after the first dining etiquette video was that I don’t want to place my napkin on a chair I find it dirty you know whoever sat there before me it’s not hygienic and here what you need to understand when you are placing the napkin is that the napkin has
Already touched the lap of your of your dress so obviously you have been out and about and your dress is not super clean either so what you have to do is when you have to understand what side of the napkin was already placed on your jeans
Or your pants or your dress and place that face uh that side facing down to the chair so the upper part that was on your lap looking upwards would still remain on top of the chair so it won’t get in touch with it in order to do so
You have to lift the napin and place it with this bottom side that was on your lap again back on the chair so when you lift it up you still have the clean part facing towards you and the so to speak the soiled part that was on your dress
Facing down on the chair it all takes practice and but the more you practice the better off you’re going to be also if you say you know I’m going to touch my mouth with it the rectangular method allows you to just use the inside of the
Napkin to dab and wipe your mouth and dab your fingers so you don’t actually this inside part doesn’t touch anything apart from you know the the the sides of of its own so I prefer the rectangular method because it allows you to have more hygienic so to speak approach to an
Napkin another commonly asked question about napkin in my first dining etiquette video was what do I do if I dropped the napkin back in the days the old etiquette books would say Do not uh worry about it just bend down pick up a napkin and continue using it there was
No need even to ask for someone to for replacement however you would say the same for cutlery if you dropped the Cutler you can ask the waiter or the butler to give you a replacement however with the new life realities we have to be very mindful of our hygiene and hence
If you drop a napkin you can ask the waiter whoever the butler to give you a replace B and that’s completely okay in general the best advice when it comes to Etiquette is to never create a lot of noise and mess around yourself if you happen to spill something if you happen
To drop something just completely ignore it make it seem like you didn’t even notice it and the same actually goes to if you see someone at the table who spilled something who dropped something was very noisy try to ignore that because actually the epitome of good manners is when not just you yourself
Are well behaved but when you do not pay atten ption to those that misbehave at the table unless of course you’re teaching them etiquette and that’s part of the job that’s what you have to do so here we are about to start our dinner and before the salad soup and Main
Course are served we always get a nice homemade a basket of bread or here we have one homemade bread we have some olive oil you can have olive oil with vinegar added to it you can have some solid butter salted or unsalted here we have olive oil we also have hummus as a
Starter um with a serving spoon as well as some selection of different kind of Olives we have some olives with pits and others that don’t have so we need to understand how do we eat an olive that has a pit inside but before we get into olives let’s start with bread we always
Break the bed first actually uh the word companion uh it comes from a Latin word compis which means with a bread so a companion is someone you share a bread with so sharing bread sharing a meal with someone is very endearing and you’ll see a lot of Partnerships a lot
Of relationships are formed after two people have shared a meal so I’m alone eating here uh but if I were to you know have someone else uh depends if I’m the host I’ll offer the bread first the guest if I’m the guest probably the host
Will offer me to take a piece of bread first once we take and break a piece of bread we put the bread into this bread plate we do not put it onto our main course plate of course if we only have a main course plate we’ll place it on the main
Course plate but since we have a little bread plate here we use the bread plate then we break the bread always with our fingers we do not use a knife on a bread at all we break a piece and we don’t create a lot of break into little pieces
And create this little solder bread around one piece at a time then since this is an olive oil that looks it’s a liquid one I will dip it into the olive oil if this was again a solid butter I would spread it but this is olive oil
And then I’ll put it inside if I were to eat a salted or unsalted butter at a room temperature and if I had a butter knife I would take a piece of the of the butter spread it on the piece of bread and put into my mouth and chew it I’ll
Be using the same technique with hummus which is something between a solid puree like texture so it’s mashed chick piece I will take a piece transfer it first to my own plate so this is a serving spoon that is for everyone to share so this is not my personal spoon it’s the spoon
That is used to serve yourself with a little bit of hummus I’ll put some more on my edge of my plate put the Serving Spoon back then I will break a piece of bread over here it’s an amazing bread actually very crunchy since I don’t have a special
Knife for hummus to spread the hummus I’ll be using the salad knife to apply a little bit of more hummus on my bread leave the knife on the side in a resting position and then eat the bread so here we have a selection of different kind of
Olives and the most difficult part about olives is people always are hesitant how do I eat an olive in an elegant way what do I do with a pit and the right answer when it comes to eating any kind of food is whatever you put uh what Whatever
Item of food you put into your mouth with your fingers you take out the bone the pit with the same way so to explain this because I’m eating all this with my fingers and that’s the right way it’s a finger food I’ll take out the pit with
My fingers so I’ll show you how I’ll do it you will always Place bones of fish pit whatever it might be that you didn’t like on the left side of the plate so all the left side is anything that is a waste so my next meal is a salad which
Is an eggplant puree like with some mousse of Parmesan and the way I could eat it is just just with a fork when I’m only using the fork I will place it in my right hand but if I opt to use Fork fork and knife I’ll use fork in my left
Hand and knife in my right hand so really the choice is up to me but the rule is if only fork is used you place it in your right hand often times you’ll see that bread as well as butter remain at the table until the main course but
Since we finished eating the bread while we were shooting this video there is no bread and butter at the table but usually you’ll see it remaining at the table until the end of the main course so the call is actually mine I can I’ll show you both ways of eating so if I
Were to use a fork and knife to eat a salad I will put the fork with THS facing inwards and i’ use the kniv to collect the food on the top of the THS of the fork so I will take cut a little bit of Parmesan then take a little bit of
Eggplant and then use a little bit of MSE parmesan to place it on top on the THS and then with the THS facing downwards I’ll just bring the the food towards my mouth and slightly lean in I will never bend down my head like this I’ll just bring my body closer over the
Plate and put it into my mouth like this the best way to look good at the table is to make sure that your elbows are not sticking out like this remember the childhood etiquette rule when your parents told you keep your elbows close to your body indeed keep your elbows
Close to your body just compare when my elbows are close to my body and I eat like this versus when I have my elbows sticking out like that always be mindful of the people that could be seated on the right or left hand side of you say
If I didn’t want to use a knife for a period of time while eating the salad but I’ve already used it once I will not ever place it back on the tablecloth I will never leave it like this on the plate because it’s a very risky position
It can slide down and soil the tablecloth I’ll place it over the top of the plate and I’ll then switch the fork to my right hand and then use it almost like a spoon here and then eat the salad like this if I want to take a pause then I
Could just place the knife with blades facing inwards place the fork on top of the knife like this and this is the resting position while I talk to someone gesture with my hands explain something we talk about something and then I resume eating never ever sit at the
Table with color in your hands and gesture like this waving explaining things if you want to use your hands look how it looks when I do it you always leave your utensils at the resting position and continue to talk and then pick them back up and continue
Eating if for some reason you don’t even want to use the knife then you will not even pick it up it will just remain here at the cutlery area it will stay there and when the waiter clears your salad dish he’ll take take away the knife that
Was meant for salad as well so the cutlery that comes in pear is also cleaned away in pear another thing to keep in mind is if you want to take a sip of water do not leave the fork in your right hand always place it in a
Resting position and since I’ve eaten a salad that had a bit of a mousse uh I’m sure that the lips are more oily now from the mousse and the olive oil I will first dab my mouth and then pick up the glass of water and take a sip when I
Take a sip from the water I’ll make sure that nothing is in my mouth I don’t have any food remaining in my mouth because I don’t want my cheeks to get swollen with the food and the water all in so first swallow and then take a sip when you
Take a sip make sure to do it from the same spot so even if you’re wearing a lipstick you’ll only have one area that is soiled with your lipstick and it’s not all over the rim of the glass the best way to be the judge of do I use a
Fork and knife to eat a salad or do I just use the fork is to understand the texture of a salad if a salad like this one comes in a in the form of a puree the texture is very smooth it has a mousse parmesan there aren’t really any
Pieces that I need to cut per se so I can just use the fork to separate a little bit of an eggplant and then use the fork to eat however if a salad comes with bell peppers carrots uh tomatoes cucumbers I can’t you really use the
Fork to cut it so I’ll need a knife to assist me in that for example salads that come with greeny leaves you will not usually cut them you’ll just use the fork to fold them or use the knife to collect it on the fork because those
Green leafy salads will um will um give out this acidic juice that when it gets in touch with a knife it can actually really corrode the taste of the salad um and your general impression of what you ate so better not to use kn and only use
Fork to eat again I urge you to understand what you’re eating to understand how to best manage either with fork or fork and knife if knife is needed so say I’m not done with a salad but I feel like I need want to finish with it I don’t want to continue eating
It and one of the questions I get asked a lot is do I finish everything or do I keep it on my plate it depends where you are which culture you’re having dinner or lunch with usually I would say if we’re talking about upscale restaurant I
Would leave a little bit on a plate not too much not to send a wrong message to a chef that I didn’t like the the the meal so I’m not eating it but I would just leave a little bit on the plate so that I have enough space for the rest
Since I still have a lot to eat I have some soup two main courses and still dessert so I’ll I know what I can fit in and so I’ll work slowly with what I have and if I’m taking if I’m done with the meal then I’ll place the knife with
Blades facing inwards and the for work uh with th upwards if I’m in England and tin’s looking downwards if I am in France putting it in a position of 11: to 4: or 5 p.m. so to speak If This Were a clock indicating that I’m done with a
Meal or you could alternatively place it in a 12 to6 position like this indicating that you are done and this plate can be cleared away the next meal I have is a soup and that has some potatoes chickpeas and some meat in it as well as as bell pepper and zucchini
So this is a soup that is not of one consistency it’s not liquid it’s not soup puree like the one I ate in the first dining etiquette video and the spoon for that was more round for any kind of a smooth puree texture like you’ll get a spoon that is completely
Not round and then this is a spoon that is more oval shaped so this is for any kind of broth soup with some vegetables and noodles and the reason it’s like that is because I’ll be point pointing with this pointy part towards my mouth to transfer the chunks of meat and
Potato and chickp into my mouth I will not be able to drink it from the side like I would a Pur like soup so this is how I would hold a spoon and I will dip into the spoon If This Were a soup puree I would dip it away from this collect it
At the edge and bring it closer to my mouth but this is a brothy a sauce likee soup so I’ll just dive into it so to speak I’ll just take a bit of some something so some carrots and some zucchini a little bit of of uh the soup
Broth as well and then I would open my mouth and transfer everything with a pointed power towards my mouth if the soup is really hot you will never blow on a soup because it will make spillage at the tablecloth to whoever is sitting in front of you or to
Your s this is immature this is something we don’t do when we are at a table with others we’ll wait for the soup to cool down or take it from the middle towards the edge of it that’s where the cool parts are and eat it like
That if you are taking say a break while eating the soup you want to talk to someone you leave the spoon inside the soup like this on the on the side that’s facing again 10 and 4 or 11 and 5 depends on how you look you leave it
Like that um so the waiter knows that you’re taking a pause you’re not done with it you’ll continue talking about things here and there um discussing things and then once you are done with it you would turn the spoon towards 12 and six therefore pointing that you are done and the soup
Can be taken away if you once the spoon has touched the soup you will never put it back on the on the table also I often see people placing their spoons like this by the bowl the thing is the spillage that’s under the spoon can create some stain on the tablecloth and
If you’re seated somewhere that is fancy the tablecloth is of a white color it will be visible so you never leave the spoon like that you always leave it on the bowl like that or inside the uh the soup if the plate is small my next meal
Is SE bass I prepared with some vegetables um and some kind of a yellow sauce I’m not sure what this is but I’ll be using a regular uh Fork which is for the main course again not a lot of restaurants these days carry a special
Fork for the fish but they do have a fish knife amazing kudos to Rose Bar for having this knife because the more I travel there are less places where I see this knife being part of their home menu so I’ll be using Fork to uh steady the
Fish and I’ll be using this knife uh to clear to open the fish in into two and actually use it to break a little bit as well so I will clean off the skin actually the skin is quite softly prepared so even if you don’t like the
Skin you can actually quite enjoy it has a really nice Grill kind of taste to it I will leave the knife back in or I can continuously hold it in my hand if I’m not going to talk or gesture but since I am I’ll leave the knife on aside because
I’m talking and then use the fork with Tes facing downwards and bring it closer to my mouth what you can also do of course I’m not going to be able to finish the whole fish all by myself but it’s a very tasty one and I can see my videographer really
Salivating from here but oh well I’m the one showing how to eat properly okay so I’ll add some more vegetables and collect it on a fork because I want to add some more texture to my fish place the knife and continue eating like this if I want to take a break again
I’ll place the fish knife and the fish Fork on top like that and I will talk to someone explain things maybe take a break can maybe take a sip of water if I want to and then if I want to resume I’ll pick up exactly where I left so
I’ll usually place the fork on top of the knife so when I’m about to collect I first take the fork and then take the knife and I’m done I’ll just Place The Knife and Fork like this it’s not very easy to place it on this plate but I’ll
Try and therefore indicating that I am done with a meal or else I can just leave it on the side of the plate like this showing that I’m done with the meal and that the meal can be cleared away another commonly asked question I get about fish is people say you know I
Learned from you that I should eat fish with fork and knife with a specific fish fork and fish knife but I’ve been told that I can eat the fish with just a fork and the answer again depends on the texture of the fish if the fish is super
Soft very smooshy it’s easily breakable so you can just use the fork to cut it and eat it then just use the fork however if you get a kind of say a seafood for example octopus or squid it’s very difficult to break it with
Just a fork so use fork and knife to do so when you’re served with a fish Fork it’s doesn’t have blades like a regular knife does it’s usually just there to help you collect or maybe clear off the skin or just help you to just move around the fish particles or um just
Break apart the the meat but it’s not really there to cut it’s just used to break so if you get a fish knife feel free to use it if you’re eating with just you don’t have a fish knife it’s a regular knife then you can just use the
Fork to cut and eat if the fish is soft like this SE bass so the final meal that I have here is uh the main course is meat with some potato puree and mushrooms I’m going to use Fork a knife to eat it um again I need to cut the
Meat unlike with the fish I can’t just use the fork I have to also use the knife uh usually the main course knife will have more um sharper blades but this is the standard main course knife so the way I’m going to eat it is I’m
Again going to hold a little bit onto the meat I’m going to cut the meat I will collect everything else on the tin of the fork with the tins facing downwards I’m going to collect some more puree on top of it and maybe add some mushrooms and I’m going to eat it like
That with forks with the tin of the fork facing downwards again bringing my body slightly closer and bringing the food inside my mouth throughout this whole video I’ve been eating using the Continental style which is the more European style of eating where the fork is constantly in
Your left hand and knife is in your right hand there is no switching of fork in your hand however there’s also American or the zigzag way of eating I’ve shown it also in my dining etiquette video and essentially what it means is you place the knife over like
This once you’ve cut the meat and then you transfer the fork into your right hand and continue eating with your right hand then switch back to your left hand hand take the knife and cut it again there’s a lot more motion happening with American zigzag way of eating and I
Would consider to look slightly less elegant because there’s a lot of more action in your hand and the way that you look more elegant and more well mannered at the table is when you’re being very discreet in your emotions if again this is the resting position I’m going to
Place my fork and knife while I’m talking and explaining to you that if you happen to have some garnish on a plate uh there’s side dish that is also part of of the meal but there’s also some garnish maybe a little bit of leaves over here some decoration you
Don’t eat the garnish when it’s part of the main course or the meal you can eat the garnish if it’s part of a cocktail say these are Olive pits or maybe not Olive pits but the olives themselves or say you have some strawberry or some um orange whatever it might be that’s part
Of the cocktail you can of course consume it of course not The Umbrellas of the cocktail but the rest you can consume with the meals I would suggest not to eat the garnish and stick to just the side dish and the M main course itself if you happen to say take a
Little bit of mushroom and you want to talk uh you want to say something and say you have some uh food remaining on your fork do not keep it on the fork like that and take a sip of water always make sure that your fork is clean so
Either do not pick up any food until you take a sip or once you have picked the food with a fork place it into your mouth chew swallow and then take a sep also never clean your fork with a knife making this sound it’s not permissible when you’re out and about
Seated at a table with others and if you want to manipulate and do something do it closer to the plate never lift your hands all the way or your cutar all the way above always do it close to the plate here collect everything never lift the food up like this always leave it
Closer to the plate and then leave the rest that you’re not using and bring the Tes facing downwards towards your mouth once you are done with a meal you again place your cutter in a position of 11 or 10 to 4 11 to 5 you leave it like this
Indicating to waiter that you are done with the meal when you’re done you never push away the plates from yourself like this which is something I get to see often times done in really nice restaurants you also do not pull it closer to you or rearrange your cut the
At the table even if you are left handed say and you want to switch the fork a knock in your hands you do so once you’ve picked up the cutlery you do not do it on the table because then you confuse the rest of the guest the rece
To both of your signs you just switch everything in your hands the same applies to your water glasses the same applies to your Cutlery because once you have replaced things at the table it might confuse your neighbors if if you happen to eat something and you might feel like there’s something stuck in
Your teeth your first urge might be to reach out for a toothpick and try to clean it at the table never ever do that even when you cover your mouth like this and try to clean your teeth it’s obvious that you’re trying to clean your teeth
If you happen to be in the table and you can’t immediately get up to clean your teeth you can use a sip of water and just swirl it slightly a little bit around your teeth to clean the teeth if it’s say a green leaf that’s stuck in there and you need some
Help and if you still feel that there’s something stuck then better excuse yourself from a table go and do it in private other things that you should only do in private apart from cleaning your teeth is also blowing your nose breaking a wind um grooming yourself applying makeup applying lipstick which
I often see women do at the table all those things should be done only in private you never do it at a table in a companionship with other people you can do it if you’re or alone at home if you’re sitting and having dinner on by
Yourself you can do whatever you want to do but you never do it when around other people especially in nice venues like this also this is to answer all those that have been asking me how do I blow my nose according to Etiquette how do I um break a wind according to Etiquette
And the answer is there’s no way you’re doing good according to Etiquette the only way that you you can do it according to Etiquette is doing it in private if you do it in private that’s the right way to do it now that the main course has been uh cleared away we have
The C the for dessert which is a dessert fork and dessert spoon and um usually everything else that was at the table will be cleared away before dessert is being served dessert comes from a French word the which means to clear everything away so everything has to be cleared
Away from the table including Bread Butter um as well as all the other drinks except for the one that I might be continuing to drink with a dessert it might be a specific type of champagne maybe a white wine or in my case it’s water and they have also served me tea
So now I’m going to eat a creme brulee because I’ve been served with a fork and and a spoon I’m going to use the fork to just dive in keep it sturdy and then I’m going to use the spoon as a knife but also I’m going to use a spoon to scoop a
Piece and bring it to my mouth often times when a dessert is slightly between solid and um and liquid you’ll get a fork and a spoon if it’s just an ice cream you’ll only use a spoon to eat but because it has a little bit of a more
Solidified top I’m going to hold it in and and I’m going to use the spoon to break a piece and then use the fork to bring it closer I’ll leave it in and then use just a spoon to bring to my mouth in this case you never put the
Fork into your mouth you’ll only use the spoon quite frankly having tasted the texture of this dessert I actually think I don’t even use I don’t even need the fork I can do just fine with just a spoon I’ll use the edge of the spoon to
Cut a little bit and then collect it all on a spoon and then transfer it to my mouth again the same technique applies to you eating the dessert and drinking sipping tea or coffee always swallow whatever is in your mouth and only after take a sip
Of tea coffee or water if you need to and the final piece for today’s video is this beautiful orange cake I have been served with a fork and a knife and I can either eat it with fork and knife depending on the texture of a cake or I
Can just use the fork depending on how soft it is so if it’s soft and can easily be cut with a fork I can just then use the fork so I am going to give it a try take a little bit of it and actually it is very squishy I don’t even
Need a knife to break it but I tried so you can use fork and knife to break it cut it if needed depends on the texture of the dessert as again as I mentioned so I’m going to eat it like that but I realized that I no longer need need a
Knife so I’m going to leave it here on the side and leave it like that for the end of this dessert just going to use the fork when you just use the fork you’ll transfer it to your right hand and just use the fork to cut the dessert
As well as eat it so I’m going to use the fork to cut a piece of this cake and then use the times to collect the fork to collect the cake and bring it close to the mouth thank you so much for watching this video until the very end I

Wow I have to keep up digging in 😊😊😊
I have my kids watch these videos. I know they really can't grasp and appreciate the whole formal etiquette, but, even if they're eating lunch at school, they can still learn simple etiquette rules that they can take into the real world. School is the place where you learn life skills like this. You never know if you're on a job interview or whatever. Any and all tips are useful, either formal or informal. Actually, if you did educational videos for kids or whoever people go on to job interviews, it would be helpful. These etiquette things aren't taught anymore, and they should be. You guys should open your audience to schools and educational videos for a larger audience. You'd probably make $$$$
I absolutely loved this video! Thank you for this gem! About the fish knife, years ago, I was served grilled shrimps with rice and the waiters placed a fish knife for us to use. The shrimp was too big and it had to be cut. This question has been bugging me for years, but that was the wrong knife for it, right? I just need to know 😂
The first video has been incredibly valuable to me in improving my manners. Thank you for making this video. I will be watching it over and over.
Thank You Jamila ❤ That was an amazing detail-packed video, thanks for sharing the knowledge 🪴
Thanks Jamila, may I request for a video? a video with tips to raise elegant and refined children? I don't have children yet however I wish to raise refined children with manners and grace. Especially at a time like now where so many parents are not raising their children with manners. I ask my mother and my husbands mother for advice (since they both did good jobs) however I want to have your take also. Thank you!
Hello Jamila, why you keep deleting my comment? The last one wasn't here even a minute 😅 I try to reach out to you as you are not responding to my request for a refund since two weeks – I assume it would be polite to give at least a replay
Excellent video Jamila! Keep up with the good work. I would like you to do a video about gift etiquette. Appropriate gifts depending on the occasions and also appropriate prices.. I mean when people are going to judge you negatively because of the price tag. I’ve also always wondered if it is considered an etiquette mistake not to include a return card in the gift. And finally, is it appropriate to gift something that you haven’t bought and belongs to you and is in a pristine condition?
My husband was fortunate to inherit 19c china, crystal, and silverware. When we have dinner parties, elderly friends know the bone marrow spoon, the fish knife, butter knife, and various spoons, etc. it is such a joy to "dine" at one's own home with linen table cloth and napkins and candle light. Such times are diminishing but why? These experiences are very special, romantic, and induce good conversation! People quaff, gobble up, eat fast, and do not dine. Dining is an experience itself! We can advance and enjoy modernity AND retain vintage styles! Thank you for educating us on etiquette!
Thank you! You are lovely
Love thia video thank you a lot Jamila
Thanks a lot❤

Last video, you placed your elbows on the table. This video, you used one hand to sip tea… Explain please

Thank you for the informative video.🤎
I would be happy to see video about service fee (tips).
I know the % depends of the restaurant categories but I want to see your point of view about service fees.🤎
Thanks so much.
How about buffet etiquette?
Wonderfully crafted video !!❤
So grateful for your videos. Would also love to see the video on wine pairing that you mentioned. Thanks for your constant commitment to delivering these informative etiquette videos.
Amazing, thank you very much 😊😊
Yes, yes, another video on only glasses please 🙋♀️
Amazing! Thank you! ✨
Excellent! It's really helpful & we need more people like you to make aware of the things what should & shouldn't be done in a public space!
This one is even better than the first one ¡ thanks¡
Hello Jamila! It's really a great video! Is there any case where we would eat a fish with our hands? In my country it is usually done this way, but I'm not sure if it's the right one.
it's always such a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you so much!
A bit sad for the videographer though haha, I hope they ate something delicious as well c:
Thank youuu ❤
It will be helpful for me if you make a video about cocktails , and drinks for women at a party , bar and give details about them.
Please elaborate how we can order drinks with elegance and class.
Thank you for this video
What if I'm eating with a friend who visits me from another country and some other friend of mines comes in the restaurant and spots me and approaches me, do I leave the friend on the table saying "excuse me" and walk aside and speak to my other friend or do I speak to them in the presence of the each other?
Hello, is it possible to do a video on how to hold your knife and fork when eating please. Thank you.
Hello again in France, they use bread to eat the fish because of the bones. Is it possible to show that way also, if you know please?
You look especially stunning in this video however what I don't like is that you seem too skinny, that doesn't look good and is concerning
I don’t leave the table while dining. But, I wonder… is it rude to request a fresh napkin after returning to the table? I cannot use a napkin after placing it on the chair (Strangers don’t sit on my dress.)
Thanks 🙏 😊
Mommy you are so beautiful 🤍🤍🖤
